  • It reminds me of my first mini, a little white lab rat skaven with a bubblegum pink tail, no detail, no thinning, one brush... Very familiar haha. I can say that I'm proud of the models I paint now for the quality of the paint job I produce, but I'm still proud of that little lab rat, because I took a stab at something completely unfamiliar and found a hobby I love.

  • My first minis, I held the primer way above them and let it settle on them like fake snow. I also used WAY too much. It looked like they had been coated in glue and dipped in fine sandpaper grit. Then, because I didn't know any better, I tried to force a brush across that surface. Ye gods. Wish I still had one to show here. I've got a tip of my own: Start with low stakes. Learn with models you don't care about, or else you have to accept that you're going to @$#&* up that one awesome model you fell in love with the instant you saw it. Sure, don't be afraid to make mistakes. But in the beginning, mistakes will be of such quantity and severity they will lead to an end product you simply can't be proud of. Better that happen with basic troopers than Grand General Whoever. You'll get there. And another: Test your scheme to completion before going army-wide. I partially recolored over 200 Tyranids after figuring out I did the wrong thing. You don't want my pain.

  • All good tips for beginners. I would add one more - paint inside out. Paint the details deepest into the mini first and the ones that protrude out last, especially flesh. Also black wash and sepia wash are your friends and make everything look better.

  • Painting straight on to plastic? Luxury! Back when I started you painted onto lead, and you weren't taught to undercoat or use two thin coats. You painted onto bare metal and when the metal showed through, you painted another few coats and pretended you couldn't still see the metal through the paint. Plastic? It was so bad in the mid-80s that you bought metal or nothing!

  • Been following your tutorials since I was 12 still no here near pro but helped me in prove drastically and made profit from selling my paint jobs due to leaning your weighs. Definitely helped me understand color theory. I still struggle with white though. I still reckon you deliberately painted that bad just to make people feel better about being boobs though.

  • That of the metal flackes is a myth right? I tought that the metal flackes are to big to go trough the paper into the paint. Miniac tried it once and nothing happend to the other paint. (Please don’t blame me if I’m wrong. I’m new to the hobby and don’t realy know to much yet.)

  • Advice for eyes/lenses. Take your time between stages and allow the paint to dry. So if you make a mistake. Use a wet brush to mop up the paint and you won’t lose your last 2 steps. Doing lenses in batches might help

  • Do you have to sand primer before you paint? Or can you just start applying color as soon as the primer dries?

    C- HUSLC- HUSLTháng trước
    • @Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy I mean after putting primer on the figure as step one do you have to scuff the primer with sand paper before you paint? Or will the paint adhere to primer hasn’t been sanded with a higher grit sandpaper, like a 900 grit? I always thought you had to scuff the primer or paint won’t stick properly.

      C- HUSLC- HUSLTháng trước
    • We apply the PVA and sand after the model has been painted. Whilst its drying, we apply watered down paint (your colour of choice) and we allow that to dry completely. What this does is allows the colour to get in every nook and cranny that is inevitable with using sand. Once the watered down paint and sand is dry, you can dry brush it until you are happy 😊

  • Great advice, but does anyone else think it's weird that he thinks "thin your paints" and "two thin coats" are memes specifically associated with him? Pretty sure that advice has been around, and said by a million people. That reminds me of my brother in law who once said, "I have a saying, 'do what you love and you won't work a day in your life."' That's not your saying, it's a super common phrase.
