A Critique of Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Part 3

This is Part 3 of 6 of a series of videos all about Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
We continue where we essentially left off, Han Solo meeting Rey and Finn, leading to the Rathtar's scene. A scene filled with confusing and contradictory writing along with monster meatballs.
Soon after, we progress into the very chunky middle portion of the plot line while taking tangents into The Lord of the Rings, Captain America: Civil War, The Shining, Ready Player One, The Simpsons and more in this 4 hour selection of Star Wars analysis.
The cameos that were present in the older parts have now been removed from current and future instalments because they are drastically out of date - My fault for the production time taking so long. Otherwise, the video is essentially very similar to the two previous parts in form.

  • That scene with Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, without CGI and with the mics in view, was better than all of TLJ. It evoked emotions in me and I think it would without any context because it was so well acted. It’s a cinematic tragedy that it was cut up in the movie.

  • Hux's speech to the troops was not enthralling at all, and I just feel embarrassed watching it. Leaders like Hitler are masters of speech and have the capability to swat millions of peoples minds, through his sheer show of power through his voice or being able to be personal with the people he's talking to. Hux is like a whiny teenager that get's grounded for coming home late. I bring this down to Abrams inability to respect the power that he is wielding, and a seeming inability to understand personality and character, why the bad guys can be attractive such as Darth Vader.

However in these days where characters have to follow a formula that is so thin that slowdowns often don't work. They make us fall asleep because remember: no one can be offended - by anything - no matter how harmless the view is...

As much as I like stories that are structured around 'the one destined person who is destined to do the thing because destiny' I really wanted to see a story that was the opposite of that. ( if that makes sense )

  • Im rather late to the party, but i was under the impression that ADR stood for additional dialogue recording. It could be dialogue over a b shot for added info, an overlay of a line or more on screen when poorly recorded originally, or something dubbed in when a character is turned just enough to not see lip movements, for plot info in a crucial moment; any additional dialogue recorded after the fact would be called ADR. Is this not correct?

  • The script of this critique is better written than the entire sequels. This is what happens when enough time, effort, care, dedication and passion are put into something, which is more than I can say about the writers of the sequels. They choose to use shortcuts rather than plowing on through the winding road, which can only lead to lazy writing, which lead to nonsensical, contrived stories. MauLer, take all the time you need for the rest of this critique. Don't let lazy writing and subpar editing ruin your work.

    • I think it's because when film is a hobby/passion for somebody, film critique and in-depth analysis can be really interesting and entertaining, film-making is an art form so it's always cool to look at the mechanics and creativity (or lack thereof) involved in the process of creating something and discussing it with others and presenting your observations. His less serious rant videos are also absolutely hilarious. Everything is inconsequential to somebody anyway, so, as long as he's having fun making these videos, who really cares? 🤷‍♀️

If it were made today, you just know that there would be no redemption for men(especially white), Gandalf would be played by Samuel L Jackson and all the Mordor scenes would be filmed at some Chinese concentration camp.

  • I remember when I first saw The Force Awakens. Though it had flaws, I didn’t hate it. I actually thought it was pretty ok. It set up a lot of story arcs that I was interested in. I was excited for episode 8 to see how they built upon what episode 7 set up. Going back and watching episode 7 now it just makes me sad. I sit there watching all these storylines they set up that they just either shit on in 8 & 9, explained in some novel most fans are never going to read, or just ignored completely. Part of the reason why episode 7 is so bad is because episodes 8 & 9 are so bad.

    • 7 got a pass on a lot of things bc of what it was looking it set up in the following films. Through my first watch it was painfully similar to ANH. Star Killer Base was just a bad idea imo. Most everything else could be forgivable. The droid secret map plans, the indestructible protagonist so early on, and the fumbled but hopefully force sensitive storm trooper plot. Kylo had such a dope introduction that had me hooked on his character. But removing the mask in subsequent films killed his intimidation and reverence for me. Just so much potential ruined and each following film made TFA a bit worse unfortunately. Clone Wars and Bad Batch a great. Mado is decent and Rogue One wasn’t bad. But other than the animated stories, SW is just falling short for me. Mauls videos are highly enjoyable tho.

  • Love your videos! Have to say though this essay has made me feel quite melancholic. If the main focus of the sequels wasn’t dwelling on stopping Empire 2.0, and more focussed on Rey finding her parents, a romance between her and Finn, or Rey slipping to the dark side in Last Jedi to then be saved in RoS, we maybe then would have a had a somewhat refreshing estuary to follow from the Good v Evil concept. I absolutely loved Force Awakens, as it opened so many doors to flesh these characters out more in exciting ways, but only to be closed for non-logical reasons by the following films. Now Force Awakens just feels like the equivalent of a rice cake. All the chemistry between characters now means nothing, the stakes are continually lowered by plot convenience, and like you RIGHTFULLY pointed out, our original heroes and their achievements are insultingly stripped of any validation. It’s heartbreaking, but also hilarious how an entire galaxy can be ocean-wide but puddle-deep.

  • Interesting history on the “dice”. During the filming of episode iv the original “dice” appear very briefly in only one scene and are never seen again. Why? Because someone on set stole them and they were never replaced because they were such a minor part of the set. So the dice obviously have no real meaning to the character Han Solo other than the 70’s cliche of having fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror.

Just like poor Star Trek. It went from a very intelligent show set in a positive future with no money, no borders, hunger, want, possessions & a race who communicated via Methodology.. to... today. • I just want to applaud you on creating the most comprehensive and astute video essays I have ever listened to. My friend suggested you and I tend to be incredibly apprehensive towards content like this when recommended by someone as I feel it is typically just an extension of their beliefs ratified by searching for content that affirms their already established bias. I went in extra defensive as the first video he told me to listen to was your unbridled rage against The Snyder Cut, of which I am a HUGE DC fan who was monumentally let down by the Joss Whedon version and then subsequently felt vindicated by the Snyder Cut. I already understood that objectively neither film was good, and had I seen the Snyder Cut alone would have been utterly underwhelmed, but standing atop the ashes of what I [rightfully] felt the DCEU was, I saw redemption personified in said Snyder cut. It was actually not bad-and for me that was enough. But after listening to your arguments for why Joss’ version was the superior film, I learned that I can subjectively disagree with you and hold on to my enjoyment and disdain for the two films respectively, but also objectively understand that you were right on the vast majority of points you made. All of that to say I have now fallen countless hours into your back catalog (the starwars films) and cannot properly express just how refreshing it is to listen to someone not only make intellectually sound points that are propped up with objectivity and reason, but are so sound and succinct that they become resolutely air-tight PLUS are accompanied with a plethora of supportive examples and even thought out solutions. You argue your own points from the position of “devil’s advocate” just to smartly point out the solidity and totality of your defense for points you are making. And I love that you also provide alternatives and solutions for problems instead of just doing what plenty of other “critical thinkers” do in their videos which is bitch and whine whilst giving no answer to their flaccid complaints, or create flaccid points with zero or even contradictory foundations when they are in support of something faulty. I hope you get the opportunity to read this and understand exactly what kind of impact you’ve had on my critical intake of film lately and know that you are a refreshing voice in a sea of screaming seagulls flocking to whatever the latest bloated whale carcass is that washed ashore for the masses to engulf without caring for what sustenance is actually there to glean and instead simply support because bandwagons (and also faux counter-bandwagons) provide them with a lowest-denominator following of morons. To quote my favorite Workaholics, your work, good sir, is “very tight butthole” 👌🏼

  • 2:44:30 It actually isn't a reference to that game- Luke's last name was originally Starkiller. The game and the base are both derived from that.

    MonadnockValleyMonadnockValleyTháng trước
    • You are probably right, but if nobody confirms that's what they intended I'm gonna assume its a reference to the more popular Starkiller character... because its not like Lucasfilm knows star wars at all nowdays lmao

  • The ONLY questions that are relevant to the modern day Star Wars franchise: 1. What FORM will the death star take in the next film? 2. What monumentally stupid venerability has it been built with that will allow our heroes to, once again, Homer Simpson it to death in a few shots? Everything else is just plot development to the SAME ENDS (reproduction of an atmosphere). MICKEY MOUSE OWNS YOUR GRANDMA!

  • It just kills me how the directors, writers, and actors of this trilogy can't even explain their characters.

  • Plot doesn't matter in modern movies. Just fast action scenes and fast plot explanations and more fast action scenes and skipping from place to place like squirrel with ADHD.

  • why are you dissecting the movie from beginning to end? what an over-laborious critiquing method.

    d0xterd0xterTháng trước
    • @d0xter Yes. Its a good way following the flow of a movie and analyse its structure. Plus its a good way to ensure you don't get loss when drafting your script and stay on track. When a teacher marks an essay, they don't start at the middle and jump around randomly. They start from the beginning.

    • @Ajjax 19 is that how people are supposed to critique things? for instance, would a book critic go paragraph by paragraph and point out everything that they don't like? no, they synopsize for clarity and then make their critiques about themes, writing style, whatever it may be.

      d0xterd0xter21 ngày trước
    • Seems perfectly reasonable to start at the beginning and finish at the end.

  • In Star Wars...do people only make like ONE droid of each type? Imagine this was in the modern day. "you're driving a Black ford fiesta, I hear the Mafioso is looking for one just like it and the other 15,000 made in that colour and model"

    RoboshiRoboshiTháng trước
    • To be as generous as I can to the film, the First Order is probably planning to round up every droid matching that description, since it's all they have to go on. It would have been cool if they were shown having caught several droids of that model, none of which had the map.
