Snazzy Labs has long been known as one of the most Mac-focused VIworld channels and today, Quinn Nelson shows you some his favorite apps. While not all are exciting, they’re important: from utilities like PDFpen to launchers like Alfred with writing apps like Ulysses and Spark thrown in between, this is one you won’t want to miss.

  • Me: let's find some cool apps Snazzy: How the hell is Alfred soooo freaking powerfullll!!!!!

  • Waiting for my new M1 Mac Air to arrive next week... Might be a silly questions, due to being a Windows user for a number of years... I purchased Norton 360 for my Desktop Gaming PC a few months ago and can be used for up to 5 devices. Is it worth downloading this onto my Mac too? I know there's opinions that Mac's very rarely get virus's due to the system set up of Apple & the apparent slow down Norton can make to my Mac. But, having spent quite a hefty amount of money, I did not want to risk not having Anti Virus on it (unsure about Malware too). Any thoughts on this please? Thanks in advance...

  • As for what you said about Mac OS and Magnet, about how Mac OS is falling behind on Microsoft with snapping... that is because they legally cannot include snapping on the OS, because it is a patented piece of software by Microsoft.. hence why don't see it on Linux or Mac OS, or any other type of OS for that matter. If they included it natively on Mac OS... Microsoft would just sue them.

  • Important app, which work on all platforms, and mobile devices - Bitwarden password manager. It's open source and free for individuals [not enterprise, that's how they make money]. It gives you lots of options for storing very strong passwords on every site. Store Cards on it, and secure notes. It's so great that I switched from a paid service to Bitwarden because their online vault is audited and open source, so more trusted. But I paid about $100 for 1Password which is not as good, and they want monthy fee to use their online vault. Bitwarden rocks.

  • I had to pause the video at 5:50 to install Alfred and read a bit about how to use it. OMG, this is so exciting and what I was always hoping to get from spotlight. Usually I need to know the location of a file, and opening the file is not as helpful as knowing it's location.

    Garry BurgessGarry Burgess2 tháng trước
  • Correct me if I'm wrong here... but: TRIM is a ATA command. Nearly every SSD supports this command, but Apple (in older versions of macOS) only enabled it for SSDs that shipped originally with a Mac. MacOS did not enable TRIM for SSDs that the user installed later (even if this drive supported the command). The operating system checked the drive identifier to distiguish the drives. What the "TRIM enabler" did was to change the drive identifier of an SSD in order to trick macOS to enable TRIM for every SSD. So if you are using a Apple SSD (eg the ones that are soldered on the logic board) you never had to use this tool. It worked out of the box. Starting with Yosemite, Apple changed it's policy on 3rd Party SSDs and allowed enabling the TRIM command of every SSD that supported it. So frankly, there should be no use in this tool. TRIM should always be enabled on a SSD on newer Macs...

  • Hey mr snazzy. quick question, sorry if its a dumb one. All these apps you recommend, do you only open them when needed? or do you just have them open on startup? obviously not all apps are needed at startup, but the apps i like to have open as soon as i turn on my mac are menu bar stats, turbo boost switcher, bartender, temperature gauge pro, spectacle, better snap too... and thats it (my machine is a 16" MBP btw). Sorry im a heathen, only recently brought to civilization in apple land, and on my windows pcs even with crap hardware, never made a fuss. but my MBP with only the above mentioned apps opening at startup, gets pretty hot (40-50c). it does eventually settle down into the high 30s but thats because i sit my MBP on an external heatsink with built in fans... should i be concerned? my 5k imac opens up almost twice as many apps upon startup, and handles everything a lot better... despite only having the 1 crappy fan that apple put inside it. im doing everything i can to make my MBP as comfy as possible, and yet the heat coming from it kinda freaks me out. any input you could dole out would be appreciated.

I always want ro get rid of Mailbutler but keep going back to it for their invisible “ your email’s been read” feature and snooze and call-back features that no one else seems to have. Dammit. Sunsama is fantastic all around, and I’d love to hear your instruction on it. Thanks for all your videos. I’ll go back to lurking in the bushes now.

  • For a window manager, I prefer Moom and for a video player, I prefer IINA. The reason I like IINA is that if I am binge watching a series on my file server, it will play the next episode without me doing anything.. Unlike VLC, I don't have to create a playlist. To be honest, I would like to use the standard apps that come with MacOS and only change them when I need more functionality. So when it comes to Spotlight vs Alfred, honestly, I've never needed more functionality than what spotlight offers. Also PDFpen costs about 79 USD.. I thought it was cheaper than Acrobat.

  • Regarding Spark, you ARE paying for it. It's collecting data. I tried it in the past and it wouldn't connect to my email server which is local bc, like Microsoft Outlook Mobile, it reroutes your connection to a third party server. Now it supports Exchange, it didn't before, but to Exchange you connect directly and has builtin push and whatnot, pretty much what MobileMe/iCloud was modeled after--again I tried with my phone blocked from the Internet and it connected but it is so insidious that they didn't account for this and still it tells you that you need to register and some other lies to get push--again, built-in to Exchange. Nevertheless I deleted it before allowing the phone on the Internet again. I'd seriously reconsider most on this list. No software it's worth being sold as a service, for starters.
