Edgar Wright - How to Do Visual Comedy

If you love visual comedy, you gotta love Edgar Wright, one of the few filmmakers who is consistently finding humor through framing, camera movement, editing, goofy sound effects and music. This is an analysis and appreciation of one of our finest comedic voices.

  • What you said in the beginning, that comedy movies are "lightly edited improv": look at the actors and writers, you have shown a lot of SNL alums. That is what they were going for. I love your analysis and I think you're right, but I think some of the clips shown are just not a fair comparison. I wouldn't say we are going backwards, rather that due to fame or something there is an influential group of American comedians right now who are shooting for a much larger target than needed.

  • I didn't know who this guy was until I realized this was the man who made Hot Fuzz. I remember watching this movie and having the biggest blast of my life. I hope they really create more movies like this because I'd definitely watch it at least. Thanks for the video.

  • I think another major factor is that Edgar Wright movies aren’t strictly comedies, they’re usually also action/horror/genre movies too. So a lot of humor can come out of using elements from other genres and turning them on their head like the World’s End example with the beers and water that uses sharp tense music during the shots of pouring drinks like a horror film would use to build up to a jump scare

  • Yesterday I watched Ant Man (2015) -- I'm just doing an MCU marathon, it's a guilty pleasure, don't judge me 😅 - and when I watched Luis' very concise, to the point renditions of how he got informed about new jobs, I got this "I know this style" feeling. So when the credits rolled - always watch through the credits in MCU movies! - and I read "screenplay by Edgar Wright" (among others) I had a big AAAAAH moment. ;-) Just came back to this EXCELLENT video to share this little story.

  • This is a very well made video, it's funny how I never saw it before. I'd like to add that being french this is the same with french comedy, they're tasteless now, it's just a succession of forced jokes that you need to have the references even to have some air going faster tru your nose once. If I want to watch a good french comedy, I'd prefer to watch someting from before the 2000s like "Les visiteurs" where every scene is surrealist, or "Le gendarme de St-Tropez". Why ? Because when I think about it, it's like a sitcom where you never have what you'd expect, it's always hysterical ! A few notable example in french comedy are: - the Nun driving the Citroen 2CV in Le Gendarme (sheALWAYS destroys the car is the most stupid ways, but in the next movie, the car is fine, like it never happened lol) viworld.info/rock/video/wpKH26eV2Jpkxpc.html - the musical chair in "La Grande Vadrouille" where the two frenchmen come back to the hostel just to find out that there's a super serious German anniversary then have to blend in with the musical chair viworld.info/rock/video/yI58pqHVt2lprGw.html - the chewing gum factory where Victor Pivert makes a "bang" in "Rabbi Jacob": viworld.info/rock/video/sJGM2maOt2BgnYU.html - Taxi when Daniel overtake the Moto: viworld.info/rock/video/l56gmGiYvHesmZc.html etc

  • what really is missing in this are the long, non-cut shots they're pretty much great in ANY movie also: with the matching scene transitions you mentioned another thing often in these movies: recalling to earlier to emphasize what has changed matching scene transitions do this very obviously but a great example is in shaun of the dead with the long shot of shaun going to work or the "something behind you in the mirror" scene there are many other examples, but edgar wright knows how to show change very well, especially adding a comedic factor of characters not realising it

    EadbertEadbertTháng trước
  • people being - eaten alive this one always gets me in shaun of the dead xD

    EadbertEadbertTháng trước
  • Sean of The Dead: THE ONE SHOT. (no no, all you gamers... Not a head shot. I'm talking about a long scene without ANY cuts.). It happens twice, first before the apocalypse, then after. It's Sean walking to the shop, no cuts, it's a thing of comedy glory.

  • Because of the visual comedy is why I'm almost only into animation instead of real-life actors, visual comedy is glorious, if I just wanted to hear a good joke I wouldn't be watching a movie but listening at a radio novel (and I have done this some times, I will never forget that Lion King parody I heard once on the radio), and animation is just perfect for this, from the character design to the performance to the color palettes to the exaggerated voices to the absurd motion movement, and because of these things I don't watch anime for visual comedy, cartoons are the best at this.
