HDR. We've all heard about it. But what does it *really* mean and is it *really* worth it? It's convoluted...
LG OLED77GX - Hit ‘where to buy’ for retail price! lgoled.co/SnazzyLabs (not sponsored)
Editors Correction: A TV stand is NOT included but a wall mount bracket comes with the purchase. The GX was made to be flush wall mounted: no gap, no shadow, nothing in the way.

HDR has now been marketed to consumers for a few years now but things are becoming increasingly complex and transparency from television manufacturers has become even more clouded. Let's talk about what high dynamic range is, what it will do for you, what HDR standards are supported by what TVs and if it really matters...

Editor’s Correction at 4:56 - A TV stand is NOT included but a wall mount bracket comes with the purchase. The GX was made to be flush wall mounted.
Woah a tv flush with the wall sounds cool
HDR matter with Sony Bravia mid range an up.
Don't lie so much
Then with all this in mind you should do a budget TV roundup telling folk which brands take a decent stab at colour accuracy within their budget constraints.
10:04 You say that Samsung hdr 10+ is one of the big 2 fighting on either side. Then say it’s in the middle. I’m confused.
We have to adjust my girlfriend's TV to be able to watch Apple TV. Most shows are on Dolby vision, and things get so dark. So we have to set the picture to dynamic HDR.
I enjoyed watching your video on my 2013 Panasonic Plasma ST TV, the baby brother of the ZT.
You're a god.
Kuro still beats top of the line current TVs....lol. ...better color?? Sure
The TV's he references in "nits"... No way they come close to level of brightness. He can read something out of a book but he has no real world experience in the matter. Smart guy, like him but it is what it is
If its not HDR10 you're wasting your money.
Why does this geeza keep doing bunny hears, is he signalling to furies fanatics?
I always find it hilarious when people complain about a cheap Brand TV when they paid half the price compared to a premium brand.
Thank goodness for Dobly Vision which IS a standard with requirements.
I like how you show that old tvs still can outperform cheapo tvs of today.
HDR is a waste of technology
Manufacturers labelling even there shitty cheap TVs “hdr ready” is the problem. Hdr itself is a fantastic technology but it requires good hdr content and A CAPABLE TV. Shitty TVs do not produce hdr
Can confirm the pioneer Kuro is the greatest tv ever made. Mine still going strong after 12 years.
LG tv’s are shit in my opinion, I have had a few for different purposes and none come close to Sony or Samsung. I actually still have an old Samsung plasma thing weighs a tonne but the picture is still superb.
HDR looks awesome!
Pretty messed up that most TVs you find don't look as good as they did at the store in display mode
This is like pc monitor I have peak 375 nits says hdr on the box looks terrible when activated
Well HDR means a ton for gaming. It's the more natural color HDR offers that makes it great in my eyes.
I got an LG OLED about a year ago and have to say its the best step up in picture Ive had in my life. But it sure put stress on the content. If whoever mastered the film or television show has not done their job correctly, then they suffer. Like some dolby vision content on netflix the black is not true black but a tiny bit elevated and then you can see it right away.
Can someone link to the point in the video where he explains why it’s a scam? All I saw was the content where he explains how great it is albeit the industry has struggled to standardize on specs.
you say 3D and curved screen don't exist anymore , I don't know where you find your info but it's not true 3D tv are still popular , 20% of the TV in a classic shop are 3D and curved screen are maybe not the top for big TV but they are the top for pc monitor
maximum entrapy has been reached on all things in this world what that means there are no new ideas there are running out of things to make epic or new and improved.. movies are copied and tweeked to seem new music etc the golden age of radio tv and life was the 20;s-2000 years thats when new things were new movies were epic inventions like the car modern science mri machines etc.. now they are stuggling to find new things because well everything has been explored everything tapped ... so they have to come up with terms and names and fancy gimics and lie about them etc to make them seem new make them seem epic when its really old tech etc or has been done before so unless i can have holographic displays in mid air with no mist stuff like that on star trek discovery and beaming me up and holodecks etc then its not new or inovative
I agree. HDR is only good for certain content like movies. It makes a bug difference when done correctly but in a lot of cases its done poorly
I'm so sorry I watch this video, this guy does not know what he's talking about.
Also 4K is a scam it’s just marketing hype to make TVs sound cooler than they actually are, in reality 4K TVs are only 2K and 8K TVs will be the proper 4K.
Plasma > OLED with HDR
..'recovering audiophile'?...I know that feeling...tossed out many high end magazines...could never afford!...'a to b' listening tests, outside of most speakers, don't show much if any improvements...just a money maker for the super rich!..
What about the OLED EVO? They supposed to be brighter and the burn in problem is a lot smaller.
Curved tv is amazing ..i love it sitting in the middle alone and enjoy👌🏼😝
I don't care, how they call it. Just wanna see full range of greyscale from complete black to pure white, plus rich colors, without visible transitions between them. My thoughts go to 2nd gen OLED, which gonna be probably brighter, but still - OLED's are just big mirrors, reflecting everything. That's why i'm curious about some new Micro LED tv's, and how they perform when comared to the OLED.
This was a big waste of time! Jesus "Snazzy"
Doesn’t add that much to the image, and the colors go a bit numb.
I agree
I don't care about my picture as much as people think I should. I turn it on, and it has a clear picture. 10 years ago I went on the plasma bandwagon. The $250 TV that I replaced it with is a noticeable difference. Is it the best? No. I'm done chasing that dragon. I just want to sit and watch a decent television. If the filmmakers want me to experience a better picture, they can buy me a better TV.
make it short so the old tv is the best?
talking about bad tv's while this video is poorly compressed.... reminds me of DVD's with several white to grey rings around a moon in the sky :D
What a wonderfully informative video
Fair play, my 2019 LG OLED HDR tv doesn’t display blacks as good as my broken 10 year old LG Plasma. Very disappointed
This has the same energy as the guy that claimed you can’t see 4K 60fps
Why didn't he mention HDR 400/ 600/ 1000? Doesn't this the standard to define the brightness level.
"Go outside for a minute" It's snowing and it's night time. I'm just going to sit here watching my 13 year old plasma.
the HDR on my phone is rubbish
I have a Panasonic Plasma TV and it looks superb after all these years and I was told that they make some of the best plasma TVs but anyway very happy with it still works fine
Here sounds good on ham radio not not a scam there
Get a CRT
And yet, we have the same old shows, and movies to watch. Hey. Someone is reading my comments before I finish typing them.
Of course you are sponsored no wonder your shitting on TCL constantly the 3rd brand in the US soon to be second
TCL is good, but cheap. I think the only thing that is rigid on my TCL 50" TV is the screen.
Talking about black levels this thing tcl I mean being budget friendly lacks must features but what it have it certainly have like black levels
I dont know about the budget ones specially the TLC ones which blows my Samsung out of the water in every conceivable way
HDR i think is not about looking better but different ..for me is OFF
I see that didn't last was picture in picture lol play a game and watch TV or a movie lol
I did fall for the 3D thing but only cause avatar was out let’s see what happens when part 2 drops .
Brighter TV's have better HDR. If you have that knowledge you will probably be OK. Yes it is more complicated then that but that is a good starting point.
Oled is pathetic for hdr... None of them are proper hdr and in most non proffesional viewing rooms they are far too dim. Measure what you like, your eyes know when you see proper hdr.
About freaking time, watched like 100 VIworld videos on this matter and none passed the information as clear as you did. Thanks a lot for making it crystal clear... and I thought by buying HDR10 I am going to be on top of the world. time to make some adjustments :)
This videos title is the biggest scam here
Can’t measure? It’s black. Just another color. Not infinite
HDTVTest probably hates you for this lmao. He definitely thinks this is worth obsessing over and has a youtube channel dedicated to explaining HDR and you just made him look dumb...
My plasma looks just as good as new oleds. It’s a 2012 Panasonic. I just wish it had 120hz and 4k. I say bring back plasma and add these 2 features and then we don’t have to worry about this brightness issue.
the jump to 1080p was the biggest improvement in screen quality. everything after that was just worse and worse and here we are HDR age, where shadows look like your in a cave and highlights blind you to the point where watching TV is painful.
thanks, that explains why I just set my new TV to SDR - it's got only 350 nits so the HDR's gotta be bad...
HDR isn’t a scam, BUT is hugely over hyped; which is no surprise as the manufacturers have bills to pay. All an HDR TV does is apply a simple tone curve to a low contrast HDR signal, which isn’t that far removed from you going into the gamma setting on your old TV and selecting an S curve. It is good and you could call it progress, but printing it everywhere in big letters is in my opinion a bit OTT
Visio has an HDR scam going on.
I have a 65” TCL and it’s BRIGHT. Way brighter than you can comfortably watch. I have mine turned way down. I guess if you were watching in direct sunlight you would need that kind of brightness....
I love my OLED and it's never failed to wow anyone who's seen it in action. And HDR content does look better than non-HDR.
@wabloWattsy there are people who do have that issue so it just mixed my BF told me them get burn in if you play video games on or leave tv on news network or weather channel the ticker bars will burn in .
Oh well, I guess you're right and all of the millions of people with OLED TVs and no burn-out are wrong then. Good to know. Until then I'll just enjoy the best TV out of everyone I know with a HDR picture that leaves people speechless.
@wabloWattsy i know someone who has oled tv that has got burn in just like plasma tvs did
@Beautiful Angel Blossom strictly speaking it's burn out and nah, don't believe everything Samsung tries to make you believe.
It will get burn in one day
IMO It might have been more efficient to describe HDR using trendy composite still pictures, showing common the funky schemes people use to get stylized images, rather than the tree shade detail process. Your way worked, just a thought. Also, HLG and SL HDR will likely be what studio and editor monitors use to optimize productions. The end user will saturate the chroma and bury the black levels because they like it, the same way music is crunched so it works with cheap earbuds.
Nano cell from LG is interesting in I have seen that picture in TV store. It was absolutely amazing. at first it looked like it was a real wooden frame when when it showed pictures I had to look really close to see that it was not a real physical wooden frame. NOTE There were different wooden frames for different pictures that I perceived It
You know that other manufacturers also manufacture Oled TV, such as Sony and Panasonic. Sony's latest TV series, there is a specific streaming service only for their TV that streams movies from Sony picture home to you at 80 mbit per second. It sounds interesting
When the standard for Ultra HD blu-ray was to be developed, it was decided that it would not have Support for 3D, probably because commercial cinemas would have any advantage? there are probably financial interests behind it
I still have a 3D TV, there should still be 3D projectors to buy. the problem was that Hollywood cheated several movies were not real 3D but they filmed with a 2D camera and then they create 3D it in an artificial way. And some had an unnatural depth much like puppet theater a cardboard box. But it was a guy who made a 3D video on VIworld It was extremely realistic He simply took a drill and aimed it and you can and it was just like it would go into your eye it was scary realistic. Underwater movies in 3D could also have the cool effect
I miss 3d tv bring it back plz
One thing to note about OLEDs dark blacks is. While the darkest colour they can display is completely pitch black. The second darkest colour is WAYY brighter than a LEDs second darkest black. This means that black borders look great on OLEDs. However, when there's a dark scene, where the background is dark (specifically not completely black) you will actually get a better experience with an LED tv. It's to do with the minimum voltage required to power OLEDs if you want to look into it more
HDR is a scam and so is NASA that juicy photo of earth in the background with curvature is nothing but CGI.. in reality there is no detectable or measurable curvature 😎 high altitude ballon footage with a non fish eye lens at 100km shows zero curve... if your curved photo is real than at 100km curvature should of been visible too. Laser tests on ground also prove the earth is level... anddddd don’t forget water does not curve, water always finds its level
An older LG OLED always seems to look better than newer HDR LCD’s.
My new tv is in a brightly lit room and this review was on point thanks I brought a Vizio MQ7 is over 400 inits at HDR and the TCL 5 is 270 inits
$3 per TV for Dolby vision...Like if a manufacturer has two identical panels and the one has this feature and is like $5-10 more, I would buy it. That is a silly
4K is 3,840 not 4096 and vertical , not across. How could you post that?
This video does an excellent job of explaining modern LCDs & OLED marketing gimmicks. As size seems to be less and less of a differing Factor with cost. Nowadays.
OLED is really the only way to view HDR and Dolby Vision. Peak brightness doesn't mean anything to me. If you can't watch TV in a dark room, HDR is the least of your concerns. BTW, VIworld needs more HDR content, I'm amazed how many videos talk about HDR but don't publish it themselves.
Dolby vision is abit better
Well hdr can be good but with the right recording and tv
Hdr is shit in samsung tvs
Clickbait title but nicely explained otherwise.
HDR is such a big gimmick i can rant for hours. I tried a few times, no one seems to care. Everyone wants to live in a fake world.
Now it is very first and foremost Nanocell from LG they show in the TV stores when it comes to LG
A movie you rent on your Apple TV probably has a better picture than a movie on Netflix. Apple is streaming the movie at high speed
Ultra HD blu-ray Disc is the way to use as a reference no streaming service And with players that have received good ratings such as Sony or Panasonic
HDR in the cell phone camera is something completely different if I am properly informed
Is not 4K HDR also more colors. Or have I misunderstood that part
LMAO Sun, trees? Are you joking man, I live in the U.K. I haven't seen a tree in years. And what is this thing called a son? I thought that was a male born child. Apart from that I totally disagree about what you are saying about "cheap" TV's. I have a 43" 4k Panasonic TV with HDR and it only cost me £499 (about $1,000,000 😁) about $600. and it a fantastic TV. Even compared to an OLED. In fact, when I was doing a comparison to their OLED version of this TV I preferred the picture quality on the LCD version and it was over £600 dearer. I really love my Panny. The only thing I hate about it is the glossy screen! Why do manufacturers still do that!! They are all guilty of it, even the £3000+ models! WHY?!
A oled owner here I still miss my kuro and Panasonic plasmas
"Worth obsessing over" says the guy who just made a whole video about it. But yeah, it's not. Nothing like these things is worth it in the big cheme of things. Luckilly, we have so much freedom that we can care about these standards. :) We have money, food, safety, living places. Why is it bad to care about this?
What a stupid way of calling ppls attention
Just upgraded to the LG 32un500 monitor. Only HDR10. Wanted something with good contrast levels compared to my older 27 inch touch screen that had horrible contrast compared to most previous monitors. Very happy with it. Maxes out at 350 nits which is very fine for a 32 inch screen. Surprised he didn't mention the screen size matters when considering brightness. Now let's talk about how horrible windows pc are at handling 4k and HDR videos. I can run many games at 4k and still get 60fps with HDR on but videos seriously tax the cpu. Microsoft and others need to fix that.
Bring back the plasma
i want cableless tv i can remote with my eyes n fingers
A click bait title makes me hate you....
Dude come on. Stop with the clickbait.
The video title caught my attention. It was so baity I had to see how bad the hot take was so I could note the video maker and not watch another video
