Fiber internet is the new cool thing in the tech world, but it can get confusing because from country-to-country (even company-to-company), definitions vary. On this episode of Snazzy Labs, we install fiber internet and explain what FTTX means, the difference between AON and PON optical networks, and why Active Ethernet is going to be an awesome solution for us. How to get faster internet? How to get lower ping time? This is how. Gigabit speeds and sub-1ms ping time to the rescue!

  • Bending fibre simply prevents the total internal reflection. It could fail too, but stretching the cable is I think most likely to snap the glass.

  • Can someone help me with this questions. Ok I have 300mbps right now cable. I am moving att offered 25 mbps with unlimited fiber optic. My question is that fast enough to handle my gaming and streaming needs. Can anyone confirm this cause I never had fiber optic so what is the difference between cable and fiber optic WiFi internet.

Jose Javier FloresJose Javier Flores11 ngày trước
    • @Jose Javier Flores yes I ask about too. I never had fiber optic but I know the plans 25 ,50,100 and 1000 . They told me they offer 25mbps copper not fiber service. I said that seems very low for a plan when you’ll offer other plans.

      Aquarius BrownAquarius Brown11 ngày trước
    • Are you 100% sure that they're (AT&T) advertising 25Mbps on fiber? That seems absurdly low for fiber internet. I believe the only fiber internet plan they offer is 1000Mbps (1Gbps) in the areas they have fiber internet service.

  • Good video, just one correction there is not such thing as 0ms ping not now not ever not even using light. The icmp package has to travel all the way down from a user land program (ping) to the kernel to a network stack to a driver to bunch of circuits then converted from electricity to light and last but not least wait for the other end to do the same steps in the reverse order. :)

  • Also, you cant test a bent fiber cable just by bedning it and loading the same webpage over and over. Do some proper speedtests otherwise you wont see the insane speed dropoff that comes with "extreme" angles as the light starts to leave the fiber strands.

  • Im really happy for you to get a fiber connection! Its amazing! But seriously, we (the isp i work for) would never sign off on the work those contractors did. You should never show the fiber cable to the outside world. Cut that and it could cost anything from 400-1200 bucks just to fix it!

  • Great info very informative. Thanks for sharing. In regards to modems, They seem to be the bottleneck as most can barely import 10gb (WAN) while the remainder Ethernet ports are typically maxed at 1gb. I love how home modem manuf advertise 10gb but is deceptive because they are talking only about the DOCSIS 3.1 which can handle 10gb BUT those modems are typically 1gb. Do you know of any fiber modems that include 10g WAN plus a 10g Ethernet or STP+ to your network? I would like the benefit of 10g speed when uploading and downloading gigs of data to and from clients for editing purposes.

  • Going from 50mbps is 1gbps is life changing. In all honesty, even homes need 1gbps to work effortlessly. With cloud services running, media servers as well as a number of streaming devices our total upload and download can creep up to over 500mb/s at any one time. When we was on 80mbps our house was a battle ground with constant arguments about lag (bufferbloat). The days of FTTC are definitely over. Businesses and consumers should be demanding full fibre now.

  • the reason it stops working is because the angle of reflection cant reflect it around that extreme of a bend. I have 1 gig speed at my home. I get 980 up and 980 down with cat 8 copper wiring hard wired.I just have my ISP modem and a tp link dual band router that will pump out 1 gig wirelessly. I want a full 1 gig up and down. But I think i need to run an fiber cable all the way to the pc. Which will require a new PCI card that has a fiber optic connection. They are about $150. You can get a laptop to 1 gig speeds. But youll need to switch out your network adapter card for a dual band 1 gig and use the 5ghz band. Which has limited distance. You might be able to get 1 gig with the 2.4 Ghz. with the upgraded card. My total cost to get 1 gig speed about 45$ for the router and $71 a month for 1 gig speed. I later built a cloud server out of an old tower using SSD hard drives and a free open source software i found on the internet. The software also comes with an app so you can stream movies and music that you have saved on your cloud.
