  • Idk if you know this but - we didn't actually defeat the nazis. The Russians did. N we actually didn't actually oppose the nazis. In fact, we were actually kind of the nazis before the nazis were the nazis. Um, it's kinda cute that you think that would be an affront to a 'murican superhero wearing the flag as his costume. But in reality, n I mean the actual truth of the matter (n maybe the writers knew this?) - um, it means almost the opposite of what you seem to think it does... Look up Ford, Disney, Bush, Koch - n probably every other major industry leader of the time. You'll see. N while you're at it, look up eugenics n sterilization n considerations for euthanasia - legally speaking...in the USA I mean. Oh, n human experimentation. Yeah, pretty much everything the nazis did that was horrible, we did it first.

  • The nazi's weren't just simply racist, they believed in a new, very American way of life, eugenics. Hitler was praised at first, appeased to, even the man of the year at first. Just like with animals, it was believed you could breed the best of humans to create the"aryan race". It had nothing to do, at its core at least, wth racism. Virginia was sterilizing those considered a burden on society for years, and it ended not that long ago. For awhile in the US, homosexuals had a choice between castration or being lobotomized. Many chose lobotomy believe it or not, now they choose the scalpel like it'll cut away their problems, wrong.

  • The nazi trait is also eased into Homelander, the "American patriot" by Edgar who told HL that Vought was originally a nazi and they covered it up in favor of corporate interests, disregarding the patriotic notion that America fought those ideals and fully stand against them.

  • I also want to note how great season 1 led to this. Homelander's showed time and time again a feeling of superiority and supremacy, and being set as the ideal of "American ideals," and then setting him up as hyper Christian and anti gay, militaristic and ready for preemptive measures. Some of these are somewhat common beliefs in conservative America, and are also exactly the beliefs neo nazis play up and cultivate in people they tend to radicalize. Is both a sensible characterization and story device, and also can be seen as a metaphor of the similarities of these ideologies from the writers

  • Are you serious? I saw no character here. I saw caricature. This is the American that's we're all supposed to despise; entitled, anti-intellectual, childish, bigoted and egotistical. He is portrayed this way through the entire run of the show. He has no redeeming qualities and has never been anything other than a villain. Stupid entitled guy is duped by charismatic newcomer with evil plan. Is that really a character arc? It seemed to me more like the most transparent political allegory I've every seen. I listened to all your points but I could not disagree more strongly. The character says lots of things, but his actions are always the same. No arc.

  • Homelander is going to get de-powered at the end of the series and then killed off. Calling it now. Stormfront never did tell him what she was doing at Sage Grove. She didn't even mention it. I think they are making an anti V compound, and were testing it there. Chekt and rekt.

    NeolithikaNeolithika4 tháng trước
  • The trailer in season two are very different for the characters. For example: Storms has flowers, lamps and fruits.. But Homelanders trailer has nothing. Its empty. Because he has no normal human life. He is a product without a normal past. Even his real name - John - is like the John Doe. Another thing I find interessting is how easy some people manipulate him. Stillwell and Storm did it and Queen at lease tried it. While Storm tells him about her past and wins him over, she still manipulates him into becoming a part of her political group - but he does not really fall for it. People with abandoment issues often fall for abusive partners and can not walk away because they grave their love.

  • I think I like Homelander best of all the characters in the show, a real Frankenstein's monster, and I just can't help but fall for that story. I would be great if he just flies away (like he said he did when it was too much) and creates this big power vacuum where no one knows what to do. He's such a useful tool for the masterminds of the show and was the motivation behind Butcher's revenge, it'd be the biggest F U to all other characters.

  • Character Arc. Gimme a break. Homelander at the end of this is exactly the same as Homelander at the start. - Finds and loses his kid - Finds and loses his Nazi Lover - Falls from grace and returns to grace - Goes from unhinged wacko to Nazi boyfriend back to wacko What, at the end of this season is different about him that it justifies calling any of the flip-flopping an arc? And this goes for most of the cast by the way. A-train, the Deep. They just go in a circle and end up back where they were, having changed nothing.

  • The destruction and rebirth cycle is a powerful, real phenomenon...and it’s kind of intimidating when you think about it. When you were talking about examples of this I recalled that episode of Mr Robot where Vera attempts to use this strategy to bring Elliott to his side. That’s a particularly interesting example too because the show tells you that they’re going to do it, then they show the process. This narrative really does make for great television. Anyways, great video boss, thank you.

  • Honestly I love how they have adapted the comic in terms of writing, not only to make it relevant to now, but taking the time to smooth the edges where they've had to chop/cut/paste (ie took bits out and reworked timelines) the pre-established story, unlike something like Game of Thrones. This so far, is a great, cohesive, adaptation of a (comic) book to a show that seems to care about being polished in contrast to the gritty/grimey content.

  • I think I have to disagree with u saying homelander is able to get behind her beliefs cuz he was close to her beliefs himself already. I think his need for love and a steady romantic relationship outweighed the fact that she had such an outdated way of thinking. The fact that he had feelings for a woman that were seemingly reciprocated wud trump anything that wud normally be a problem in a normal relationship with normal people. To sum it up: Homelanders need to be loved > Everything else

  • The inverse effect of providing a clear reference of where the character began, despite it already being established in season 1, is it emphasizes that he hasn't happened to change in the time gap since the end of season 2. Another storytelling method that could be used is showing that a character IS different than where we left them and then explaining how they got that way. So even if a character has been established in previous installments, reestablishing that they HAVEN'T changed is still important.

  • Homelander is physically superior than anyone. While he's not the most intellectually superior (as demonstrated in his parle with the Vought CEO), he knows that if he wanted he could take whatever he wants and destroy all that oppose him (as seen in his thoughts when facing the demonstrators). Psychologically he's wrestling with the idea being this "God", balancing might and benevolence. But his emotional inferiority cripples him.
