Into The Spider-Verse - Greatness Through Reversal | Film Perfection

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is Sony's answer to its previous animated efforts of the Emoji Movie. The film is amazing in many regards -- bold narrative, incredible visuals, etc -- but perhaps the greatest highlight is its ability of using reversals. In today's episode of Film Perfection, let's take a closer look at Into the Spiderverse and try to figure out how it uses reversals and what it achieves by doing so.

Interesting to see what they do with Into The Spiderverse 2. The Spiderverse after credits scene here with Oscar Isaac is great and also opens up a lot of possibilities. Will they tie this franchise to the feature films and bring in familiar faces like Tom Hardy's Venom or Tom Holland's Peter Parker and Spider-man? In any case, this movie bodes well for the Spider-man franchise.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
After a bite from a radioactive spider grants him superpowers, Brooklyn teen Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) becomes the one and only Spider-Man. When a gateway into the multiverse opens up, Miles soon realizes he isn't the only spider superhero out there, as he meets many different versions of himself pulled in from other universes, including the original Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). Together they fight off the evil Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) and attempt to save the world. Directed by Bob Persichetti.
Captain America: Civil War
In this superhero epic, the denizens of the Marvel Universe are forced to pick sides when Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) come to blows over ideological differences. After a mission involving a new Avengers squad led by Cap ends with several civilian casualties in Lagos, the team are asked to sign an agreement that would force them to take orders from a United Nations panel. Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) pressures Cap to accept this new arrangement, in part because he feels deeply guilty about his own past recklessness; Captain America, however, fears that the Avengers will only be corrupted by bureaucracy. Their disagreement eventually escalates into all-out war when Cap's old friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), now a brainwashed assassin known as the Winter Soldier, reenters the picture. Captain America: Civil War brings back former Avengers characters such as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Vision (Paul Bettany); The Tragedy of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; into the spiderverse cinemasins; into the spiderverse everything wrong with; honest trailer into the spiderverse; it also drags into the fray low-rent superhero Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and introduces both the powerful African prince Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and a new, younger incarnation of Spider-Man (Tom Holland). Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.
The Lone Ranger
The Lone Ranger rides again with this big-budget Walt Disney Pictures production starring Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the famed gunman. The story centers on Tonto's recollection of the adventures that found lawman John Reid transformed into The Lone Ranger, legendary hero of the Old West. Gore Verbinski directs from a script by Justin Haythe, Ted Elliott, and Terry Rossio.

Miles Morales as the main character also felt perfect as he was already an amazing established character. Thanks for the video.

  • Thank you for explaining why ITSV is so overrated. You're saying that reversal is a great trick you can use to avoid character development, but for me that fell flat. I really needed a properly developed villain, and disposable characters like the Porky Pig Spiderman were just distracting and annoying. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. I just couldn't understand why so many people were raving when there were multiple parts where I felt uninvested.

  • There is no difference between visual comedy and dialogue comedy. They are both just “comedy” and both should be used in anything funny ever made. There should never be a choice between the two. I bet Edgar wright DOES NOT consider himself as a “visual comedy specialist,” instead he just considers himself funny. He puts funny jokes into his movies, some relying on visuals, some relying on dialogue, but his best jokes/scenarios rely on both. Your doing yourself a MASSIVE disservice by deciding that visual comedy is superior. Hell, the literal funniest thing that humans know how to do is stand up comedy, which is like 80% talking bare minimum. Stop gate keeping comedy, if it’s funny then it’s funny

  • I think the “predictability” of Aaron being the prowler was good because it means the audience has been putting the pieces together. Too many filmmakers these days really want to subvert audience expectations and end up writing something that makes no sense at all. It’s like they hate the people watching. They’re more concerned with subverting than writing a great story. That’s how we got that wack ass ending for game of thrones. Also I feel that the reveal was more for Miles. If the audience expected it then the real purpose (can’t think of a diff word lol) is us seeing how Miles reacts to that revelation. It’s the emotional response that’s really important here. And how this hurts the trusting relationship they have. And the writers put little details here and there that lead up to the big reveal so the audience can rewatch and notice these little details and think “wow that adds up”

  • Watching this in December 2020! I don't know if it was already mentioned in the 1300+ comments, but one reason the villains were still somehow successfully memorable even though they didn't have nearly as much development relative to the heroes was because of the old art (animation?) principle of having recognizable (distinct?) silhouettes. Olivia's mess of hair foreshadowed the octopus arms, Kingpin is large and in charge (though I haven't yet thought about why he would mainly be square), Prowler is sharp, angular, usually in motion, almost always "at attention." To tie that in with the "reversal" theme, Olivia's hair looked "uncontrollable" while the actual arms flowed and followed her every command, Kingpin's mass and attitude turned out to just be compensating for being petty and small, and Aaron when he wasn't Prowling was laid back, relaxed, "at ease." Also, great reversal by Aunt May when Olivia storms the house! The expectation of shock and horror but instead consternation and mother-like disappointment makes it much more likely that this is one of the Spider-Man universes where May gets with Otto Octavius.

    ApolloluxApollolux5 tháng trước
  • Reversals as development works so well in Spiderverse because the origin story of Spiderman has been done so much that we have deep expectations where a solid reversal feels really satisfying. If Doc Oc was just a nameless science villain, it would have been crap. But THE Doc Oc? Spiderman is in troouuuubbbllle

  • A subversion of expectation means you are denied something you thought you were getting. The reason why this isn't disappointing in Spider-Verse is because you were already given what you were denied. Example: Dock Oc gets hit by a truck at the end and there is no epic final confrontation. That's okay, there was already an epic Dock Oc fight in the movie. By comparison, Last Jedi didn't understand this, it was denial with no satisfaction. And Last Jedi is in essence the same film: established legendary hero who screwed his legacy up and has a death wish, then someone with a similar background, but younger, comes along to shake him out of his misery and assume his mantle and continue the saga.

  • I mean, Doctor Octopus was really a given because the movie gave to much screen time to a character that clearly was interested in someone related to the protagonists. Miles' Uncle is not really a reversal but a way to increase the stakes, the actual reveal is not that he's the villain, but the fact that now Miles has to confront what he believes and change from it.

  • Or what about the reversal Filmento did when he made the dude on the train explain that his guys were outside. Set up at least twice before where we see the visual gag, and then we're expecting the rule of threes but he doesn't show the gag the third time. Which pays off since that was what the segment was about. And then it cuts to the next segment, beautiful.

  • Is it just me or do sad moments in comedies suck? Like I really like when a movie is funny for the whole time, like Johnny English (also good visual comedies). They have a low point, as they should, but I don’t like *sad* moments. Johnny English Strikes Again is a perfect example *minor spoilers* The scene when the villain successfully fooled everyone and the Prime Minister told English to basically F off and he’s at the car is the low point for this character. It’s the saddest point in the movie and you feel like he’s about to start kicking the damn car when it it starts raining. But then his partner comes in and delivers good news and the funny is back on within a minute. For a comedy movie, I feel like that’s the best possible shape.
