The Marvel Cinematic Universe, also known as the Infinity Saga, features multifaceted, three-dimensional characters. In particular, Iron Man and Captain America have compelling and complete arcs that span the series’ impressive run. This video dives into those arcs to examine how they're introduced as flawed characters, demonstrate how they're forced into extreme and opposite positions at the midpoint of their journeys, and explore how the completion of their character arcs leads to balance and closure for both heroes.

  • I'm fascinated by Captain America's change from Steve Rogers (war-time bonds salesman, to questioning legitimacy of power to handing over symbol), to John Walker (corruptibility and loyalty without questioning), to Sam (a new collective power). Keen for your take! "The only power I have is that I believe we can do better. We can't demand that people step up if we don't meet them halfway. Look, you control the banks.... You can knock down a forest with an email; you can feed a million people with a phone call. But the question is, who's in the room with you when you're making those decisions? Hmm? Is it the people you're gonna impact? Or is it just more people like you?"

  • Now, all due respect, I love Goodfellas and taxi driver and Scorsese is one of the best to ever do it, But I don’t think he really understood the lengths these movies went to to tell a whole arc for characters over the span of almost 30 films.

  • Anybody notice how in infinity when stark says “stick the time down the garbage disposal “ strange says it may be our best chance vs him . Where as Tony says “conversely may be his best chance against us “ And the time stone ends up being how thanos gets his last stone and wins . Also how they start endgame and ultimately win

  • Caps ending was so satisfying for me, because i remember feeling gutted at the end of the original Cap America movie in cinemas cos he missed his date, End game finally he get's that dance. Cpt. America: "You're not the guy to make the sacrifice play, to lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you." When Stark Sacrificed himself in 'End Game' this was the only bit i could think of :'( Civil War -- Hawkeye: We haven't met yet. I'm Clint." Black Panther: "I don't care. " Endgame -- Black Panther: "CLINT! Give it to me." "I got that reference"

  • 6:48 Anyone else finding this quote insane? Tony gives up power to a government entity: automatically deemed selfless Steve stands by his principles of freedom and the separation of powers for all: considered selfish (or self-interested) Maybe Tony is blindly selfless? But unless the only entities outside of the self is the government, these definitions make little sense.

  • the flaw is in end game ... time travel? really? the script got lazy. I think they backed themselves into a corner and didn't know how to get the good guys to win after Thanos actually won in infinity wars. If the solution was time travel all along they should have introduced it somewhere in the other films that Tony or SHIELD or whomever was already working on it, they then can could have taken Dr. Pimms quantum technology as the missing piece and gone from there. Cinematically End Game is spectacular, especially the end battle, the script falls too flat and eye rolling for me with the time travel as the solution.

  • When Tony makes the decision to do the snap and kill Thanos, he is put in the exact same place that Captain once was, when he dove that plane into the ice. I believe that the main arc for Tony throughout the whole series was exactly that: make him do that choice, the choice Steve made 70 or so years ago. Even the consequences of the choice were the same: Steve sacrificed his whole life together with Peggy, and so does Tony with his life with Pepper. if that isn't just poetry and awesome screenwriting, I don't know what is.

  • I’m curious... what do think think would ultimately happen if A. Steve signed ( other than the obvious where others followed and signed as well) B. Tony refused to sign ( other than having others like Rhodes follow along as well as likely making it so everyone else had a LOT less legal trouble.) C. Tony signed while Steve refused but they had an understanding and respect for each other’s decisions and continue to trust each other. E.g. Tony asks Ross to go bring them in and at the airport just puts on a show but let’s them escape sorta deal.

  • It's crazy how Tony's ideals and Steve's ideals literally flip by Civil War. Tony doesn't like to follow orders, doing things his way, and Steve likes to go by the book and do as he is told, and by civil war these ideals are same but held by opposite characters. Tony believes they should be forced to follow orders after their recklessness cost lives, and Steve believes they are sacrificing their rights to choose by signing for that. Absolutely crazy how Marvel pulls that off and hardly anyone really notices. Expertly done writing.

  • The most depressing comment from Steve ever was cut from Civil War as he limped away from iron man: “MY FATHER MADE THAT SHIELD! YOU DONT DESERVE IT!” Tony exclaimed unable to move. Steve thought back to the man he was before this, before he chose to refuse to register and felt an enormous guilt drop on his shoulders. “You’re right.” He said dropping the shield to the ground as clattered and caused Tony to become silent again.

  • It’s interesting because I have always said that the Infinity Saga is a story of Tony and Steve swapping views on the world. Somehow people think this is a “Hard line conservative and Super Liberal” No, it’s not like that at all. The most conservative of the two of them, would not be allowed in the Republican Party today (which I guess is a low bar but still).

  • I’ve always wondered why (in my opinion, at least) it seems like Marvel movies are better than DC. This video essay explains it so well. Also, did you HAVE to include the script lines from Endgame? The wounds left by Tony’s death had just finished healing, and how they’re ripped open again. And this is the first time I’ve cried over Cap’s ending. The script is so beautiful. He really and truly did deserve his Happy Ending. 💛

  • Marvel cares so much about its characters and spends time and effort crafting them very carefully. This makes respect and care for them too. DC is the complete opposite of that, and the Synder cut Justice League is still shit but twice as long, which is a shame cause I really want to like DC heroes. DC needs their own Kevin Feige who understand and respect comic characters. Now Disney is leverage Kevin Feige and Jon Favorea to save Star Wars. I've never been a Star Wars fan and hated the two prequels I've seen but Mandolorian got me completely hooked. Can't wait to see what Kevin and Marvel's going to do next.
