This movie has already received a lot of praise, but it's also offended a lot of people. I thought I could discuss what I like and dislike, and what I think it all means.

  • I think the end is perfect, the sybolization of hitler as a beat up monster with a bullet in his head. JoJo actually ditching the regime despite his loyalty and exposure, helping Elsa showing that he cares for her. The guy (forgot his name) helping JoJo realizing that he would die, showing that they were like father and son in their mentality. The American troops inside the battered town, showing how the nazis were delt with after ww2. This movie is aboslutly well done, id give it a 9/10

  • My favorite out of all the imagery throughout the whole movie would be the quick shots of the windows when Jojo finds his mother hanging. The curved windows look like eyes, watching all of the atrocities going on during this era. As it’s often said, history always has its eyes on you. It had me shaken to my core.

  • 12:26 you would think a person who does movie reviews would do a little research before making the video. Those shoes are symbolic. One significant piece of wardrobe in the film are the shoes worn by Rosie, Jojo’s mother, played by Scarlett Johansson. The two-tone brown-and-white shoes are at first a symbol of the beauty Jojo sees in his mother, the playfulness, but then they telegraph a tragedy. Waititi often lingers on the shoes in shots, or frames shots with them in view. Rosie was someone who was inspired by artists and was “eclectic,” says Rubeo. Once she had sketched the shoes, Rubeo had them custom-made for the movie. “They serve this duality, the shoes represent this happy time, but they’re also the bearer of bad news,” Rubeo says. In contrast, Elsa (Tomasin McKenzie), the Jewish girl hidden by Rosie in a crawl space in her house, doesn’t wear shoes. Rubeo points out that Elsa only wears shoes twice during the movie. “Once when the Gestapo shows up, and the other when she’s leaving and is free

  • Mocking Nazis is a much better way to represent them. When you make them scary or intimidating you are giving into the image they wanted you have of them. A lot of footage of German soldiers marching or huge speeches that are used in documentaries and films came from Nazi Wartime Propaganda.

    Sean GallagherSean Gallagher5 ngày trước
    • @Anita Remenárová You could not be more incorrect. You are mocking them, which means that what you say about them is NOT TRUE. If you really, REALLY want to get into the mind of Adolf Hitler, Anita, look here: archive.org/details/PoliticalTestamentOfAdolfHitler

Luckily her family was all fine but she told me that Freedom felt so good after the war. Nazi Germany and Japanese Empire were kinda similar outside of Jewish Massacre of course. I hope we could spread peace by these type of movies.

  • what i love about how this movie portrays the nazis is the fact they made them goofballs and a joke, not only does that make you notice how stupid their decisions were but they are also seen as what they really were: humans and i don't mean this is a positive way towards them, i mean it in the way that all my life when i was taught history everyone made the nazis seem as these untouchable creatures that were able to kill you at sight and nothing could stop them but the truth is they were pathetic humans with way too much power on their hands but at the end of the day they weren't untouchable at all

    SiriusSirius6 ngày trước
    • I mean, this movie shows that they were just people trying to get by. Jojo or Captain Klenzendorf aren´t bad people, they just have to obey commands or they face the consequences. Just like any regime like this, it just gives an opportunity for awful people to be awful while the good people are stuck in the middle.

  • one thing that I think should be mentioned is that the nazis throughout the movie are never portrayed in a very serious fashion which devalues/disregards the terrible cause and terrible things they did. if there were a few scenes with nazi soldiers being evil then I think the atmosphere of satire around the nazis in the movie would be complete. having them only be stupid is not accurate at all and these scenes would fit right in with the other scenes that contrast with the rest of the movie by emphasizing the dark underlying tones of the nazi regime in the movie.

    Leo GallagherLeo Gallagher6 ngày trước
    • My dude has completely missed the part where they kill multiple people including Jojo´s mother. The story of this movie is told from Jojo´s POV, of course you won´t see many of the atrocities commited by the nazis because that wouldn´t make sense in the context of this movie. First, it takes place in Jojo´s hometown, not a concentration camp or a battlefield so hanging traitors is as far as you can realistically go. Second, since Jojo idealizes the party he likely ignores/downplays all the terrible things he sees until he is forced to see them with his mother´s death. I think this movie handles these topics perfectly and just adding more atrocities just for the sake of *"Look! Nazis bad!"* would take away from this movie.

    • @Anita Remenárová more than talking to himself I saw it as making up a father-like figure that offers him guidance and support. Which is well thought because the father archetype probably played a role in nazist and fascist cult of the leader. His goofy side is probably more like a cinematographic choice made to lighten the atmosphere and make us smile. Which I really liked.

    Anko MitarashiAnko Mitarashi7 ngày trước
    • You have no clue what you´re talking about. The point of this movie is not to be a documentary, it´s the author´s thoughts on this topic. The author doesn´t want people to admire or respect the nazis therefore they bring into attention all the ridiculous things they did by exaggerating them. That is not censorship. Censorship would be if they completely removed some aspects of the truth and they didn´t so there you go. Think before you comment next time.

    Kaiju Slayer333Kaiju Slayer3338 ngày trước
    • @Kaiju Slayer333 Renner was not a communist. All post-war states were puppets - both western and eastern. Besides, what would the geopolitical situation mean for the life of two children? For all intents and purposes, and especially compared to the nazi regime, they were free.

      BadPunzLordBadPunzLord7 ngày trước
    • @BadPunzLord You do realize they were still a puppet like every other country in Soviet control right? Like every country was technically independent, but most of the communist ones were puppets.

      Kaiju Slayer333Kaiju Slayer3337 ngày trước
    • @Kaiju Slayer333 On 20 April 1945, the Soviets, without asking their Western allies,[4] instructed Renner to form a provisional government. Seven days later Renner's cabinet took office, declared the independence of Austria from Nazi Germany and called for the creation of a democratic state along the lines of the First Austrian Republic.[4] Soviet acceptance of Renner was not an isolated episode; their officers re-established district administrations and appointed local mayors, frequently following the advice of the locals, even before the battle was over.[5] Soviet misbehaviour and sexual violence/violent interrogation was awful, but increased crime was common in most post war states, and the red army tried many things to prevent it. Most of it was over by 1946.
