In 2010, Microsoft made a social smartphone for teens and 20 somethings who didn't want a smartphone. It... well, it didn't work out. Let's learn about Microsoft Kin!

J Allard was the executive at Microsoft that had been CTO of Consumer Products and brought a lot of successes to the market like Windows 95, Xbox, Xbox Live, and Zune. While the former wasn't a success compared to Apple's iPod, it had a lot of great attributes and the hardware/software was solid. The 2007 iPhone was $599 on a two-year contract and required an expensive $30/mo. data plan. Far too expensive for teens. And the other smartphones? Well, they were for nerds! Or, at least business people. What began as a focused, well-thought-out plan to bring a high-end feature phone to market for teens focused on social media and instant messaging spiraled out of control costing Microsoft and Verizon Wireless over $1B in losses. That phone? Microsoft Kin.

  • The Kin-Two was a great phone. They released an update that added calculator support, better online browsing, and some messaging fixes including video and image messaging. That was about 6 months to a year after release. Unfortunately, it was too-little-too-late for most people. There were reports of a large stock just sitting in distribution centers of KIN phones that couldn't sell, so Microsoft handed the reins over to Verizon, including the SDK, shutdown KIN Studio and Verizon made a new build that removed KIN Studio support and the need for a "smart phone" plan by nixing features. Then they re-released it as the "KIN ONEm" and "KIN TWOm", and forced the rest of us to update to that build, it sucked... It wasn't long after that, that Microsoft released Windows Phone 7... I Stuck with Microsoft through Mobile 6.5, KIN TWO, Windows Phone 7, Phone 7.8, Phone 8, and Phone 10 (Usually HTC or Lumia series)... But then had to switch to Samsung's Note flagship phones (S7, S8, and now S10+) and installed Microsoft Launcher for Android... I really miss the Windows phones, every last one of them!

I unfortunately couldn't convince my parents to buy it, because they thought I would distract myself with the browser instead of doing homework. For a dumb phone it looks a lot cooler and the keyboard was better than the LG Cosmos' I wound up getting, but I never could convince them to pay for one.

  • I remember the Kin! I was one of those tech obsessed kids in HS and I was super excited for this thing, affordable, good looking, and what I THOUGHT was going to be a sort of smartphone-lite experience. I remember being flabbergasted when they killed it like a month later. Never saw one in person or for sale, and still today I have not. I Still really love the designs though, even today they are fantastic looking little devices.

  • Yeah, I got one of these while in middle school. My mom told me and my sister that the Verizon guy said they were popular with teens. I'm not sure if he lied to her, or if she lied to us, but I'm pretty sure it was after the "update" that I got it because I've never seen any of those social features. The FM radio was cool though Edit: Actually finished the video, yeah I definitely had the One M

  • I remember this! Too bad Microsoft let its own incompetence get in its way. I loved and still love my Zune! I think that would have been more successful as a phone than windows phone if they took Google's approach and opened it up for devs to make apps. Also too bad about the kin. Good idea to take the guy who is passionate about the project and spearheading the whole thing out and replacing him with the ole business standard. Then release it YEARS late. No wonder it flopped so hard. Just like windows phone did!

  • Back in the day, I had the first iteration of the Zune. It has been so long, I don't remember the specifics, but at some point very early on (within a month of purchasing), it simply did. not. work. It must have been in the year.... ~2006??? It was terrible. The first ipod was out by then, but as a 'non-techy' person, I just didn't 'get' the Apple vs. PC thing. Meaning, I wasn't in tune with the fact that Apple products, just simply, worked. (for the most part). Long story short, my experience with Zune was AWFUL.

    Daniel WilhiteDaniel Wilhite5 tháng trước
    • I should also mention that I didn't do much to reach out to tech support to fix the issue. I just got pissed and threw the damn thing in the trash. That one's on me, LOL.

Just because people begrudgingly accept garbage autocorrect to this day because, surprise surprise, what the customer wants does NOT control the market and it's just cheaper for companies to have shit software instead of GOOD hardware, does NOT mean it was a good idea. - Desktop class Web Browser: _looks at the current mobile web_ LOL, you're JOKING right?
