Microsoft in the mid-2000s just couldn't get things right. While Xbox 360 was doing well, Windows Vista was a spectacular disaster and the launch of the iPhone and Google Android ultimately pushed Microsoft and the Windows Phone operating system out of the market. But a few years before that there was Zune: a portable MP3 player brave enough to take on the iPod. Did it work? Clearly not... Why, however, was Microsoft's music player such a failure and why did it cost them over a billion dollars in losses?
Hey, that's a nice t-shirt.
@Yug Shukla . never gonna give you up never gonna let you down never gonna run around dessert you
I knew that this comment would be here
MKBHD shirt. Nice
tech tip
🤣🤣🤣🤣 still sponsering stuff now on other channels
"Squirting"???? Were they "taking the piss"?? LOL :P
I've always wanted an iPod but all I have is a fiio.
5:47 squirt on each other 🤨
I had the ipod nano 3rd gen.................i miss that thing🤧
Are you here because Elon's Tweet?
the OS in zoon HD looks very much like Windows Phone OS
I know I'm late but... I don't understanding this squirting business... let me look it up in google...
Don't forget that you can stream Zune Pass to your Xbox 360 before the kinect experience.
Had a 2nd gen nano 2GB
i had the zune second generation i believe it was the 8gb actually and i never had any issue, i actually loved it... then again i never had an ipod, i did have the iphone 3 but i had a great experience with zune
I honestly loved my ZuneHD, compact, responsive, excellent sound reproduction and a great UI. One of my favorite items was the ‘create a playlist’ feature, imo still one of the best auto compilation features. Too bad they already soured the pond with previous releases and didn’t get to this format until standalone music devices were phasing out
Heres my ipods: Ipod Nano,Ipod touch 3rd gen and a 4th gen, thats all lol
13:27 MEW! great band, underrated.
I always thought your eyes were brown, they're still pretty tho
A Zune fanboy? I see you are a man of culture, one day I will get another Zune HD
I always had one of those MP3 players that took a single aa battery
My military friend owned a Zune and he (allegedly 🙄) wanted me to load it with pirated movies. I thought it was pretty cool but I don't think I've ever seen one in stores.
I bought my iPod 5th gen from a kid at school for $5 because he wanted to trade it for a bowl of weed
I will fight you on that "worse in every way" in regards to the Zune software. It worked and worked well. iTunes on Windows was trash and often duplicated and/ or deleted people's entire music libraries. It was such a huge pain in the ass trying to restore somebody's music collection.
This would be a better video if the guy did not think he was a comedian and laughed at his own jokes.
iPod 5
I got the ipod touch 4 nano 1 and 6
I didn't even finish the video before I opened a new Ebay tab and searched for Zune HD. Now I really want one.
I still play MP3 files instead of paying for listening music.
Zune Hd Looks like from the future ngl
That brings me back; when music players would skip.
“...the operating system literally everybody used.” This is literally not true. Dear millennials: please stop saying literally for everything.
That ZuneHD was a great product.
Loved my zune player. Only downside its screen randomly stopped working.
Zune looks like a suitcase. Why would young people want to buy a brown suitcases looking tech? Yuck yuck yuck!
iPod Nano
I had one! A family member bought me one for xmas (it was a red one, I think it was an 80 as I remember it being the bigger version you showed and not the flash one... and yeah that pad worked well and the stock ear buds were top quality for the price and I still a pair to this day). I wanted an mp3 player and knew of iPods but knew they were crazy expensive so this one was a nice runner up and pretty sure it was pretty expensive itself so I was super happy when I got it (as all I had before that were really cheap mp3 players that broke on me and memory cards would not fit and other issues... those cheap no name mp3 players were just awful). EDIT: Wow it was more expensive? I did not know that. I was curious why they had bought me that instead of the iPod but they probably did not know what they were looking into. I switched to iPod Touch awhile after (sold the Zune a friend) and eventually started buying used iPhones to use as glorified iPods (same cost as a new iPod Touch but the iPhones get far superior hardware).
I only know Zune from the orange black windoS XP theme. I loved it
I had the iPod nano 5th generation, and the iPod classic 5th generation. Still have and use them.
I never owned an iPod, but I did have a Zune and Zune HD! Man I loved those things!
I miss my Zune HD...
I had the brown/green one and loved it SO much.. More than my iPod.
Fun fact, the first consumer OLED product was the Sony Clie VZ-90 released in 2004. It was a handheld palm pilot device with email, web, and music/video player.
8:44 And how come almost everything in Apple products is soldered? Such as RAM, CPU, graphics chips, memory and so on. - I thought they had such a superior design.
I own an iPod Touch 6th Gen.
The Zune software is STILL superior to iTunes in almost every way. Apple needs to kill that monster already.
The gigbeat's OS was made by microsoft. It was Windows Media Center Portable. It was a skinned version they put on the zune of the same thing. The hardware was all toshiba. The OS was all microsoft.
I bought the ipod touch 5th generation with my own money. It was the first Apple product I bought with my money and I still have it.
Maybe if it hadn't been branded as a "Microsoft" product it may have done better.
My brother had a Zune and I had an iPod Nano. I actually loved the ZUNE though. It was so far ahead of its time.
Who remembers the SCSI vs. FireWire wars? I was team SCSI. I think it's funny how Serial actually came back around and killed all other standards.
The Zune HD reminds me of the Window Phones I had. It must be frustrating for those involved with these products to see their work come to nothing. When I first had a Windows Phone in 2014 it was a great phone. When I gave up on the Windows Phone in 2020 it was a dumb phone.
If Microsoft had a dollar for every time a third-party developer fixed some horrendous problem with their products they might actually be worth as much as Apple.
The Metro UI Language of the Zune HD made Windows phone one of the most beautiful Smartphone UIs of all times imo. Crappy, yes. Basically unusable because of lacking App support right from the start, yes. But undeniably beautiful.
The zune hd also had artist bio and album bio.
Nano
if youre old enough to be watching this video, you probably ownedd an ipod too me, a 13 yr old who just clicked on a random vid in my recomended cuz im bored
Zune HD could have competed with Apple had they made it a phone too.
Im 14. have an iPod Photo
Metro was panned for being ugly at the time. Ascetics change through the years; rounded and 3d-looking icons were all the rage at the time.
I actually really liked my Zune. And the zune membership was great. I had a 128gb zune and a Zune HD and I never had issues with it. Though, now that it's gone, I've gone back to apple everything.
"poo brown and mushy peas grean" dankpods - 2020
Didn't have enough cash for an ipod
So much squirting going on here, not even gonna bother reading the comments section because I know what they will all be about too🤣🤣🤣
Microsoft product just suck ,every thing they make is garbage. They make apple 🍎 product look great. Only reason I use apple , is they don’t have competition.
We’re not in a great place now
The brown and green is awesome!!
That playthrough of Super Mario Bros gave me anxiety
I believe I was the only one in my school who owned a zune when it first came it let alone own both a zune and a iPod
Legit still have the Zune HD. I loved it.
Twitters fleets are the new squirting
Yes iPhone sucks I know about the best theology in the world HUAWEI!!! :+🦾🦾🦾😎 I have HUAWEI P20 PRO 🥰🥰🥰
Microsoft, even today, can get you about 80% there. There's always something missing.. whether it being software, or hardware, which made the product seem incomplete. But when you have Apple taking the reigns, you can see where they lead the industry of tech: first the touch screen phones. Everything laughed it at, now everybody copies it. Then I remember Steve Ballmer calling the iPad Apple's Windows Vista (let's be real, Vista was 100x better than 8, at least Vista brought 64-bit to the mainstream) and look at it today, replacing laptops. Their ear-pods which a lot of people made fun of, turned out to be one of the most amazing piece of headphones you can get, and with it's instant pairing, the software is just... something that Microsoft wishes it can do. Now you have the marriage of the iPad and Desktop/laptop macs with their M1 chips, making x86 architecture looking very last gen now. The next step is actually make a touch interface that'll finally make desktop applications and touch based devices make sense. Microsoft has been trying for years (almost 10) with their surface tablets, but just can't quite get it right. We'll have apple to thank for that when it comes out in the next 3 years. That's what Apple is good at doing, being patient and focused, and not worrying what the competition is doing. Just like field of dreams says: If you build it, they will come.
Zune HD had dark mode as default before dark mode was even a thing. Microsoft out spotified Spotify and yet Zune gets a bad rap as being a failure. Not only was it superior to Apple's iDevice, it introduced the world the entire concept of streaming media before Spotify was even a thing! Unfortunately none of what is show in this video functions anymore since Microsoft killed it's entire Zune media service along with everything else. The most convenient feature that I used was streaming my personal music library stored on my OneDrive which seamlessly worked with Zune music pass. Didn't matter if the media I had was from the service or from my personal library, it was all available in one app. Now there are a few Cloud music apps on Android & iOS but nothing compared to the entire service as a whole like Zune Music.
I still own a iPod Photo and buy songs on iTunes on my 2009 MacBook Pro and I’m typing this on my iPhone 5s
The Zune wasn’t horrible. I actually thought Windows Phone was pretty good too. They moved too slow though. By the time they finally got in the game it was too late.
Zune was better and I loved the design. That being said, I had an iPod mini, nano, touch, then an iPod classic.
AirDrop is the modern version of Squirting
I still have my Ipod
Brown and green are my favourite colors
15:04 ye, not the zune
Ipod touch 7
The cold thumb preoperatively fax because poultry byerly phone up a tight malaysia. panoramic, magenta argentina
load balancing? pcm power control module? i think you made up a couple of things right there ;)
I bought it as soon as it came in 2006 to get out of the “iPod herd” 🤣
Did anyone notice he said “Bettery Battery” life?!😂😂
I have a 5th gen iPod classic (which I lost :( ) and a 1st gen iPod touch
I have the nano 3g and 7g and iPod shuffle
Someone get this guy a cup of water
I do find it unfortunate that Metro UI did not survive into the new and modern Microsoft we have today...
I'd love to have a simple, brand new Ipod shuffle right now! No screens, no nothing, a small pure minimalist design and a battery that can hold for 24h non stop . And a headphones jack!
I have 2 ipods. one is a custom zebra pod and a mint condition never opened black ipod
I had the 120GB Zune. I totally forgot about the “squirting” feature.
The problem with Zune was incorrect for the swedish market. In 2006, MP3 players for PC was available at 50$. Filesharing for music started dying in 2007. Cellphones that were smartphones in its day (Samsung F480, D900, Ericsson P800, Nokia N95, Blackberry, early Motorola 3G phones etc.) long before android/iphone - could play both mp3 and movies in 2007. And also, Spotify was free Beta in that time aswell in Sweden and some other countries..
ltt store dot com
No i have never owned an iPod
I had an iPod Classic 5th Gen (iPod Video), iPod Nano 3rd Gen, and iPod nano 7th Gen before finally getting my first iPhone (iPhone 8+) and transferring all of my music onto it.
I had a Zune HD and that was my favorite MP3 player I ever owned it was damn near indestructible and I liked the interface
My first and only Zune was the Zune HD which i bought in 2010. I used it for about a year and it did what it was supposed to do: entertain me. To me, the sound was much superior to any iPod that my friends had, and once I was able to master the Zune Desktop, syncing it was a breeze. I stopped using the Zune in protest when Microsoft discontinued it in late 2011, and jumped to buying a Sony MP3 Walkman, which just died last week. I took my Zune out of storage, and after an overnight charge, it is working now like it did back in the day.
I still wonder how ipod touch 4 managed to run smoothly with just ¼ gb RAM on ios 4. Ios 5 was abysmal though
I have a 4th gen Nano, as well as a 6th gen Nano.
ipod touch 4gen
I own an iPod video 5.5, and an iPod mini.
Its sound quality maybe is still the best. No device ever sounded any better than Zune. I was amazed by listening to a song with a Zune HD.
