It's pretty amazing that computers work at all. The notion that we've created these incredibly reliable inter-connected web of low-cost machines is beyond what science fiction could have even imagined just 30 years ago. Many are considering upgrading to fiber internet-with 1Gbps speeds in both directions-however we've upgraded to 10 Gigabit internet which is some of the fastest small-business/residential internet speeds in the United States. The problem is that even with the wold's fastest internet, there are still frequently slowdowns dependent on the task. That's because total bandwidth is just one small piece of the pie. Throughput is determined by lots of factors like latency, routers and switching, infrastructure cabling, caching, and more. Let's talk about them all today.

  • the problem is also that the internet speeds are in mbps but file sizes are in megabytes so for example 1000 megabits or mbps are 125 megabytes per second, so your internet speed will be slower than you think it is

  • You can saturate your 10G internet connection using Usenet by 1. using multiple usenet providers 2. not unpacking the files 3. donwloading to a ram disk For scientific purpose of course :)

  • *cries* In 1Mbps download and .5Mbps upload. My bandwidth is certainly a problem. I wish i could hit youtubes limits. lol I'm getting 100Mbps connection here soon. My electrical provider has been setting up a fiber network for all their customers for the last 6 or so years. It's finally reached my house a few weeks ago. Just waiting for them to come hook it up in the house.

  • I have FIOS gigabit, and what I found to be the biggest issue is just latency. DNS is one place, the second and perhaps more important is just having the right router that shapes traffic well. Gigabit can feel like 50 Mbps if you have buffer bloat. Why, well that DNS request and other requests get held up in a buffer causing pages and actions to appear to be delayed, well and they are. Fix the bloat and it's amazing how fast even a slower connection can feel. Knowing this is one thing, making sure you ensure each setup is working as good as it can be is another. 10Gb, well shouldn't have any buffer issues.

  • A lot of people don't realize how crazy 10 Gbps is. Well, there are several LOCAL buses in your computer that are actually slower. Most hard drives and even most SSDs cannot even move data or store/retrieve data at that speed. There are no shortage of drives that can and even exceed that speed but they are the vast minority of drives available. Just... Just think about that and how insane that is.

  • Should test using ipref since it's common practice for internet providers give speedtest, servers preferably treatment, like they do with streaming service. Also you will find VIworld will purposely throttle users because there resources are not infinite. Hard drive IO is the biggest bottle neck and even old gen processors without encryption instructions.

It's like if I had a friend who has Google Fiber with 1000 Mb/s Download and 100 Mb/s Upload, if my connection is only 52 Mb/s Down and 11 Mb/s Up, my connection will bottleneck the connection and we'll communicate at my speeds

  • So excellent video. I just want to point out something that is not right about your 'traceroute' section. While some of it you are right, there is a bit that you either don't understand or did not include. Just because you are in the same city as a datacenter does not mean that you will have a different traceroute. You could live literally next door to a datacenter with an IX (Internet Exchange) and never touch it. It all depends on who your network provider peers with and how they are routing traffic. So if I have Comcast and I live next door to a datacenter with an IX that deals with Comcast traffic it is very possible I would go through that hop which will make things nicer, but if I live next to a DC that does not deal with comcast peering then I deal with whatever Routing I am given.

  • Great explanation video of how bandwidth isn't speed!

    Rider0fBuffaloRider0fBuffalo3 tháng trước
  • 2 things: using a different isp = they will most likely all rent into existing infrastructure. so they use the same cable to your house as there is only one 🤷‍♂️ why should there be a change in speed? especially a massive one? rebooting the router can cause full flex DSL lines (set to perform as fast as they can instead of running fixed profiles) to set its target noise level (dB) higher and therefore make the line slower to prevent those unexpected interruptions. it’s basically trading speed for stability...

  • fiber does not work the way that you say. For any given distance the latency for fiber is low (light speed low) the amount of data being sent, is no more than the speed of the link. 1mbit is 1mbit, be it copper of fiber. Fiber will have a lower latency and can cover a longer distance before needing to be amplified than copper. It is a myth that fiber links are faster. They do have lower latency and are impervious to electromagnetic interference. Less noise more signal.
