  • RF transmission time from earth to Mars takes between 5 and 20 minutes. The near real-time at 5:00 is not possible. Nobody is STUPID enough to send a manned ship from Earth to Mars without testing the technology first.

  • One of the reasons of the enduring power of 2001 is the simplicity of the soundtrack, especially because you can't hear things in a vacuum. IMHO this silence creates tension and drama, and becomes a key dramatic tool for foregrounding the isolation of a human in space. Sadly this physical certainty is so often ignored, and like any failure of credibility, the films are the worse for it.

  • approaching the speed of light means never going faster than light. verbiage is weird in this. weird the intelligence (4th type maybe?) would of done anything different....unmanned probes vs a ship with a human. wonder if it exists in the future that the majority would say "no such thing as aliens" I guess that what you get when you eat Martian mushrooms. yummy

  • It takes from 5 to 20 min for a radio signal to travel from Earth to Mars, depending on planets position. How exactly were they able to have an instant communication when he emerged at Mars orbit? 🤔

  • so it took the aliens 21 hours to reach earth whereas this guy with his lighspeed ship reached the aliens in probably 5-10 minutes :so basically the aliens kidnapped him confiscated his high tech ship and then dropped him off home in their slower ship (its like robbers stopping u on the road taking ur Lamborghini from you and then leaving u with a honda as goodwill lol)

  • There's a slightly misunderstanding about the speed of light. Basically you're moving in space and time. When you move faster in space, you move slower in time (that's relativity). So if you move at the speed of light and then can't move faster in space, that means you don't move in time. So when you travel at the speed of light, your time is stoped (but not the time of an observator from outside). So that means the travel (in that case from Earth to Mars) for the astronaut should be instantaneous but still 3 mins for the other people on Earth. Sometimes, pure cience is way crazier than SF.

Hoping for a technological Saviour by flattering our intellect while ignoring our sinful human nature. Only God can save us from our present condition. Love the ending here.

But we’ve only built ONE mars colony?
