  • I loved Jonathan creek - don’t know if it still holds up, I made a pact with a best friend that we’d only watch it together and then she moved and I became a mystical rat that only talks in riddles, so we haven’t had the chance to rewatch it, but we could always figure out how the culprit did the crime. It was great

  • I remember when the "How did Sherlock fake his own death??" discussion raced through my friends like wildfire. Some of them would spend hours excitedly coming up with theories, and I was there with them, watching, when the episode finally aired that called them stupid assholes for caring. They were devastated. They felt betrayed by a show that they had invested so much love in. Not even GoT fans felt as heartbroken as Sherlock fans did on that fateful day. I'm not blaming them for being invested at all - what the hell is fiction for if not to be enjoyed and appreciated? F*ck you Moffat - if you're not interested in making something interesting for fans, don't create fiction. Simple as that.

  • I did enjoy the show a lot and thinking about it, I was watching it more or less as a comedy. I just liked Benedict being an asshole and thats it. As for the 4th season... It's just undeniable. It breaks down compleatly. I actualy thought they were making another season. That last episode can't be even considered an ending. The whole sister plot is so bad, that I comparetively remambered Mery dying as a good plotpoint

It brings up a few good points but some of them like the one about matt smith's first episode being just him saying "I'm scary, go, bye bye." *but that's besides the point because that's doctor who and not sherlock.*

  • BRAINFART: whould it have been a better show if Moriarty had killed himself and then had people fuck with Sherlock "from beyond the grave" just to slowly drive him crazy, chasing a ghost, and always being one step behind, because their instructions are to always tell him, "well, you almost got it". Then when he had broken him, show a video recorded just before he killed himself saying something to the effect of "I WON, and you can't get me back, cause I'm already dead lol" And then realising how badly he got gotten, goes insane (mumbling in a straight jacket, "he isn't dead" over and over again & end it on "I was killed by a dead man" killed by a dead man being the episode name for Moriarty's death) And then we can wait 10 years for him to get "normal".

  • Sorry, but no. Sherlock is not garbage just because it differs from the source material.

    Asher CopakenAsher Copaken3 ngày trước
    • @RyanKaufman It sort of is. About half the video is spent talking about how the show has a continuous story-line, how Sherlock isn't shown from Watson's perspective, and how the information is delivered to the audience as Sherlock solves the case rather than pieced together at the end, without actually explaining why any of this is a problem beyond the fact that it's different from the source material. In order to actually review a story based on its own merit, you need to figure out what the purpose of the changes to the original material are for and what the story is trying to accomplish rather than just saying that it's different so it's bad. Besides, the two stories are inherently different. They take place in different time periods, have different story structures, go about solving mysteries differently, treat their characters differently, and one gives Sherlock and arc, so directly comparing them in order to judge the show's worth when they're trying to accomplish two completely different things and tell completely different stories is just stupid.

  • Wow... thanks for tackling this with the heated gusto it extremely deserved, and also for retroactively validating my perspective by putting words to things that I noticed but didn't have language for at the time. This was hugely cathartic for me. I was a teenage girl on Tumblr at the time of the Sherlock episodes coming out and I remember sort of getting sucked into watching them and caring because people I followed posted endlessly about it and I wanted to be in on the discussion. I remember gaslighting myself by telling myself that maybe stories just didn't have to make sense the way *I* would prefer they would, and so I should stay openminded or some goopy horseshit like that - maybe stories don't need to go in the direction they are clearly pointing toward, or provide any reasoning or logic or structure or thematic elements or character development whatsoever...maybe my need for emotional catharsis through stories that help me cope with life is misplaced or foolish or not sophisticated enough? I totally bought the shame package Moffat is so obviously selling to himself about teenage girls, in other words. Man, that's devastating. I really spent some of my formative years learning to distrust my critical thinking skills and even to inwardly mock myself for wanting good, cohesive art, huh?

  • I think the final nail in the coffin of British Culture Moffat can drive in is to produce a show called "Shake Spire" where recognizable Shakespeare characters are prisoners in a giant island prison spire a la Azkaban, and they all come together during a prison riot and take over the island and then the show becomes like a mix of Lord of the Flies and Pirates of the Caribbean because some of the prisoners will become rum-smuggling pirates. Romeo will be a transvestite woman who works for Juliet who is a drug dealer. Juliet needs to fake her own death to get out of dealing with mafia kingpin Hamlet so she creates a drug that Romeo then ODs on when he believes Juliet actually killed herself but he was in love with her too because she was the only one who treated him like a man.

  • Tbh, most of your points about why the Sherlock series sucks is just making me think about why that Hercule Poirot series with David Suchet was great. Funny little man with his funny little mustache solves a new case every episode, and then he explains it all to me at the end in a long monologue. I fuckin loved that series, I remember spending a whole summer in middle school just binging it. Also the intro/credit sequence is probably my favorite of any show, it’s so weird I love it.

  • I am SO glad someone else finally said what I've been trying to tell people about Moffat for years. The man. Has a massive. EGO. My parents and I tried to figure out why Doctor Who, Matt Smith onwards, was so... Not good. And it dawned on me a couple of years ago that it's because Moffat was doing two things: 1) Writing for a character far more intelligent than him, and solving everything with a quick, jargon-filled ramble he hoped no one was paying tooo much attention to, and 2) He suddenly cast the Doctor as this superhero being, as opposed to an intelligent being with a sense of right and love of exploration/knowledge. The two combined meant there was NO jeopardy (everything would be solved by a speech and the sonic screwdriver. Prove me wrong), and the Doctor was no longer a grounded character, but this "zaney", OTT person that was essentially shaking keys at toddlers: the adult edition. And then he got his own show and did the EXACT same fucking thing with Sherlock Holmes. Thank Christ for Mark Gatiss, s'all I'm saying - you can just tell who wrote which parts of that series. And the only common thread I can think of is Moffat's ego. He thinks he's some genius writer, and that the more convaluted/"myserious" (Mary's background, Eurus Holmes, all of the Matt Smith/Peter Capaldi companions) something is, the better it is. No. No that's not what makes a good story. And even if it WAS, you need to be more intelligent than the characters/plots you're writing, or you won't be able to see the logical plot route/train of thought they'd make, and instead you create impossible links through [insert jargon] seemingly without explanation, and leave your audiences confused and dissatisfied. Sound familiar?
