SpaceX launched 60 Starlink satellites atop a Falcon 9 rocket from Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 4, 2021. The first stage of the rocket landed several minutes later on the 'Of Course I Still Love You' droneship in the Atlantic Ocean. Full Story:

  • B.S.! All I saw was (as usual) a heavily cut live feed (allegedly live) and then the signal returning after the critical moment. If SpaceX can produce such amazing rockets and NASA can send live-streaming back from the Moon in the 1960's/70's, why can't we see a rocket land without losing signal?

      Ian HallIan Hall2 ngày trước
    • Because video is transmitted via a satellite link. This requires a satellite dish to be precisly oriented to a satellite. Not an easy task, when a rocket engine blasts at the satellite dish. Video and telemetry are not installed to entertain the audience but to give engeneers clues of what went wrong. For this a recording is sufficient (and actually much better). Guess what: video and telemetry are recorded at the platform and in the rocket. Cut offs in the satellite link are no big deal for the engineers, since nobody could react in real time anyway. Live video is not a top priority issue for performing such a mission. So why waste money to make it happen?

    • @UnBuiltTree Roots Found the article. Besides that I barely found any of the papers the author read over the five-month research period, the equation is missing considering resources required to produce the fuel (and all other materials). I also don't understand the "eye for eye" argument (others are polluting too, so why shouldn't I be allowed). Didn't hear about the two other things (non-reflective materials, deorbiting), but I guess this would have been a good thing to do right away. I can see several trains per night. And let's see how many of the several thousand sats actually will deorbit (not that we wouldn't have a second chance here). If it doesn't work, we can still send African children to clean up. They would even have Internet up there from the rest of the satellites... Edit: thinking this over... What a magnificent idea to deorbit non renewable recourses... And all this for internet in remote places.

      Saila LiamgSaila Liamg13 giờ trước
    • @Saila Liamg Sorry i grossly over exaggerated how much rockets pollution produce its like 0.0000059% of all (carbon) pollution. For the source the everyday astronaut has a great article and video on it. And for the light pollution i think there starting to do stuff like tinting the bright parts and and using un-reflective materials. They also de-orbit themselves leaving almost no space junk up there

      UnBuiltTree RootsUnBuiltTree Roots13 giờ trước
    • @UnBuiltTree Roots But you are right with the rest: there are many more unreasonable things and all are only there for the money. Like Starlink.

      Saila LiamgSaila Liamg13 giờ trước
    • @UnBuiltTree Roots Got a source for this? Besides I'm also talking about light pollution for astronomy, space debris, or the consideration that no Elon asked the rest of the world if they needed it.

      Saila LiamgSaila Liamg14 giờ trước
    • @Saila Liamg cars produce more negative effects for the environment in a week than rockets a year. There’s almost no drawback and spacex is planning to become net-0 in the future. Attack coal mines, oil drilling, fracking, and harvesting natural gas well before you attack rockets.
