Contrast Paints are a really useful and versatile paint and can yield some great results. In this video, Duncan demonstrates some great techniques from getting started with Contrast paints, fine-lining and some easy blending techniques.
Please note: Use a STAINLESS STEEL or GLASS ball-bearing to mix your paint. (Thanks for the tip everybody)

can contrast paints be used to soften the transition between 2 colours? im using volupus pink to try and make the transition between screamer pink and (barak nur burgundy+screamer pink mix) softer
I was wondering about the undercoat for contrast paints. Do they need to be specifically wraithbone and grey seer or could something like the Army Painter's brush-on primer work, or does it need to be similar to the former two?
We like to use it over colours such as Zandri Dust, Wraithbone or Grey Seer. But you can use it over most colours (except black). Feel free to experiment to see what you like.
I thought water was bad to use to thin Contrast paints. I bought the Contrast Medium because GW said that.....
Can you do a tutorial on painting sisters of battle in red armor cream robes?
Biggest issue with shade paints.. They look like SHIT on cadian shock troops.
The blended effect with the medium is so cool! I wonder if It's possible to use this effect to paint power swords
Is someone knows what palette he’s using ? :)
Duncan Rhodes was recently found dead in the Himalayan mountains because he was only wearing “two thin coats”
I didn't expect you can use Guilliman Flesh like that.
Really helps thanks
Thanks for sharing
hi all, bit of an amateur and only heard of contrast very recently, we still priming? i would imagine if we were it would be with white...
Duncan using army painter products. I’ll never get used to it :)
Brilliant instructions from a talented artist. You have earned my subscription!
Man, all this time I've been using a chopstick.
Dude, thank you so much for creating this chanel. You’re the boss and my new favourite chanel. Thank you a thousand times!
what kind of undercoat spray can I use for these?
Thanks for an actual useful video on contrasts
PAINTING VIDEOS WHICH DO NOT END WITH A FINISHED MINIATURE HURTS ME! :(
Brilliant video, has been really helpful. quick question Duncan i f you dont mind. im going to use the black templar contrast paint to do my black templar eradicators. Ill start with an undercoat of leadbelcher then apply the two thin coats like you suggest. i will then finish the rest in the normal method. my question is about touching up and correcting any mistakes. is it ok to use the contrast paint to touch up and correct like i would do with abaddon black in the normal method. or would you use the leadbelcher and then the contrast paint on top of that? thankyou for your time. Simon
Gw: turns off comments to they're videos. Duncan: Gets literally hundreds of positive comments and helpful suggestions from his fans and tries to reply where he can. Thank you for being you and helping us all perfect our two thin coat philosophy over the years.
Thank you for the kind word Rebecca we truly appreciate them.😊
Great video! Thank you for all the advise!
In the grim darkness of 2020 there is only WAR 💣🇺🇲🦇
Is there a chart i can reference for knowing the strength of the contrast paints? that would be super handy
Just watched the noise marine trailer good job man you looked like prince
Thanks for the heads up, Duncan. When blending any paints in warmer counties, such as Oz, you'll need to have both puddles of colors prepped before adding to the model. Gulliman's flesh would have been dry-ish by the time you prepped, then applied the other color on the guard's claw.
* checks to see if april fools video * it isnt. Is this just one big middle finger to gw duncan? Thats not how you use contrasts...
what a beast painting!
The G-man flesh coat for shading gold ! absolute fking love it. Always used Reikland and nuln oil on my Custodes, definitely going to change that moving forward !
@@
Man that guilloman flesh is really really nice on the gold
Yeah, its a great use of the Contrast Paint.
what happens if instead of a grey base you use a black one? would it make it look uglier?
Quick explanation, quick demonstration and repetitive instructional phrases to keep us all on track...👌🏻
Hello, this is Ned Schneebly
Ned? Is that really you?
I've been at it now since the 80tis, But still not all that good at it but I enjoy the hobby. I am learning a lot from your videos. Your quite the accomplished painter. And the things that you show are quite relevant in helping me go beyond table ready painting. Where I have been stuck for so long. lol Thank you very much !
I like this guy and the tutorial is good but he talks so fast and so breathlessly _I_ am feeling short of breath. Lots of knowledge to share!
1 thick coat!
Question, how does contrast paint work on more soft plastic/rubber minitures like figures from Descent 2nd edition?
Classic army painter brush, splits immediately.
Can you put a sock on your head and paint !?
Does feel like Duncan is free to talk the straight dope.
This is a great video, so helpful! Thanks
So... Contrast paints are magic. Got it.
Do you advise for cleaning your brushest when using contrast paint, though?
Can you make a video on painting robes, if one hasnt been made already? Thanks in advance!
@Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy Thanks for the response, Duncan!
We'll add it to our list Miguel 😊
when you die, your plot is gonna say " two thin coats"
You can get some pretty cool effects by painting some other contrasts over metals as well. For instance, I use the wet technique to mix Plaguebearer Flesh and Snakebite Leather on top of a layers of Ironbreaker to get this aged looking metal, but so that the color is specifically uneven, since metal doesn't exactly get a uniform patina as it ages. I'm doing a similar thing with the Indomitus Necrons. I base the metal parts in Canoptek Alloy, then when that is dry I go over it with Talassar Blue to give it this somewhat cobalt look instead of the flat blue of power armor. I really like how contrasts let the metallic quality show through the color, but it doesn't look like you just tried to mix color with metallic pigment.
So you can use water to thin contrast paint?
i use the regiment from army painter too since months. love this brush ^^ But why do u use water for creating glazes and not a glaze medium? (i'm a noob. it's a serious question)
NOOOOOOOOO DUNCAN NOOOOOOO DONT USE CONTRAST NOOOOOOO
I know this was uploaded a long time ago but with the new indomitus tutorials I was wondering if you could use a contrast paint over another similar base colour to do a kind of glaze/shade effect, for example using Blood Angels red over Mephiston red spray or if it would be better to use a darker colour like Flesh Tearers red?
This video save my model! Thanks! Now it is time to simple green...
Fantastic! Glad it helped
...so it's just washes.
10,000 "all we need to do"'s later
Contrast I feel shouldn't replace normal paints, but I think using it for textured parts of miniatures (cloaks, rippled surfaces, ya know) using it along side normal paints and paint techniques work very well imo
Super helpful, thanks!
Until Duncan keeps doing painting videos, the world is safe
Is it good idea to use surface primer, then contrast pain, after that nult oil and matt varnish?
may actually bother painting up a space marine army now does it work with drybrushing the highlights over the contrast paints too?
Absolutely loving your content, and it's filled with fantastic tips and strategies to get the most out of painting our miniatures. But man, you gotta slow down with your talking. Quit the energy drinks and take a breath from time to time, you're interesting! There's no need to rush 👌
Ho kinofrohan, thanks for the constructive feedback. We'll most definitely work on it 😊 And thank you for the kind a comments too 👍
Nope, can't see any difference also way to much chat and not enough seeing how to paint I'd like to see the painting not the bloke
Awesome!
Duncan, can you make a Video how to paint a Catachan Jungle Fighter?
Who needs contrast paint when you can have layer paint with about 8 tons of water I wasn’t joking either it’s basically the exact same (and I find that it works better)
that black contrast lowlighting is great. I feel stupid for never thinking to do it...
video/sound/graphics & editing quality here is genuinely unexpectedly super professional. double props to whoever is responsible. ofc the content is great also!
Thank you. The guy responsible is Roger, the silent part of the our two man team.
And now I know why my 1 thick coat of dark angels green looks absolutely awful. 🤦♂️ Thank you Duncan for showing us how to actually use contrast paints.
Our pleasure James, glad it helped.
this space marine looks so much better as a battle ready models compared the GWs recent indomidus battle ready videos. i think the way they use their contrast paint makes models look awful but the way u do it makes then look quite nice
I was half expecting him to follow that „Super easy“ with „barely an inconvenience“
I thought the whole point of starting your own channel was so you could talk about stuff that isn't made by GW.
How about just go to the army painter
Contrast paint my ass, its glazing pure and simple.
Cool, now we can get duncans REAL opinion and advice on using contrast paints
Could you put a pattern under that you wanted to show through? Like a set of lines or grey scale shading and then just color is with contrast paints?
If your lines are both light and dark (high contrast between them) you could get an interesting result 😊
Whats up with all the two coats jokes?
What? You can paint with paint? Next you're going to make a video about toasting toast, bah!
How did you know 😲?
i wish i could give two thin likes.
We'll pretend you did 😁
After 3 years working abroad I came home to find tons of unpainted models and stacks of citadel paints that had dried up. Having got the paints moist again and primed some models I realised that the my old way of base + recess shade + edge highlight + varnish was going to take me forever even during lockdown. GW grabbed my attention with their “one thick coat” line and I was about to plomp down the cash for a collection of contrast paints. Your video taught me that contrast paints actually need an extra degree of skill to manage and are more of a tool than a solution. I thinks it’s best that I just cut out the layering stage and do an all over coat of shade instead of recess and call that battle ready! UPDATE: Couldn’t resist the allure of having some table top ready Termagants in Leviathan colours so grabbed the appropriate Contrast paints and boy am I pleasantly surprised! They really do what they set out to do - get models appropriately ready to be viewed from above the table top in as short a sitting as possible. I think the one thick coat sales pitch doesn’t work though - I’m using my artifice brush to control it and to make sure I don’t have to go back back and touch up with Wraithbone. Honestly I never could apply shades properly and relied on the varnish effect of ard coat to dazzle - now the model looks pretty natural on the first pass!
Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy Thank you for replying! Means a lot after having watched all your vids since getting into the hobby! By way of another update i managed to paint up my Smurfs (Assault On Black Reach Box) and my Nids (Shield Of Baal: Deathstorm Box) - Ultramarines Blue and Shyish Purple were challenging to begin with but as i said your video showed the need to take a bit of extra care which is why I’m using an artifice brush for the minis. Also, instead of strokes with a loaded brush I’m doing quick but careful dabs with a loaded sharp tip (think of it as mimicking a tattooist) - that way i avoid the streaky brush stains or uneven pooling that occurs with the higher pigment contrast paints (Shyish etc) but forgo the need to start watering down with medium and thus adding an extra step. Ultimately neatness is key! I’m learning that the only way to speed up painting is to simply enjoy painting and have fun with the brush in hand because as the old adage goes, times flies when you are...a flying hive tyrant having fun lol. Thanks again and all the best with your new channel and beyond!
That's awesome Anthony 😊
Thank you Duncan, excellent tutorial 👍🍺
Doesn't mix paint properly... "this is fine, don't worry about it" Aaaand I've immediately switched off the channel.
May I ask, havent you been employed by GW in the past? Did you start your own business now?
@Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy Thx for Info! I am pressing thumbs and wish you all expected and wanted success!
Yes, that is true. There are two of us you partnered up to start the Academy.
It'd be cool to see you tackle a creature caster model.
Given how many layers that space marine needed it seems like painting it with the normal paints would be easier..🤔
What size ball bearing do You use?
We buy Army Painter stainless steel ball bearings but a 3mm glass or stainless steel will suffice 😊
Am I correct in assuming that the ball bearing comment is in regards to shaking the paint, including the gold? Because my gold NEVER comes out that think, it’s always watery, despite how hard I shake it.
Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy sweet, thanks for the reply. Also turns out I had the wrong gold and the one I had is apparently deplorable and as such, off to GW store on the way home from work haha
A stainless steel or glass ball bearing will definitely help to mix the pigment etc. Just make sure the lid is tightly closed and shake away 😊
Thanks mate, some good ideas for using contrast - would never have thought you could paint a space marine in this way, always learning!
Glad to help
Oh shit, i was today years old when i found out you had your own channel
😂 Welcome aboard and thanks for the support
Duncan I have very bad eye sight, sadly mistakes will happen. What is the best way to fix an error like when I get belthars gold onto warp lightning?
If you go back to your undercoats paint, say Wraithbone for instance, apply that over the mistake. Then once dry, apply your Contrast paint over that area then add your layer paint. BUT, if you're only applying Contrast paint you'll have to apply the Wraithbone to the whole panel then reapply the Warp Lightning or else you'll end up with a 'tideline' effect. We hope that this answers your question and helps 😊
Thanks for a great tutorial Duncan 👍
Is there any way to categorize the contrast paint into the weak/mid/strong tones at a glance? Or is it just experience working with them?
Duncan using army painter brushes makes me happy. Actually everything about this channel pleases me, Duncan is a real mini painting hero. Maccrage blue over the contrast ultramarines blue blew my mind!
I love the long form nature of your videos now and it feels so much more honest without GW's marketing department looming over.
The like to dislike ratio completes my life
Now that I can finally comment on one of your videos... I returned to the hobby in 2018, your videos assisted me in shaking off the rust, and elevating my painting. I'm getting to the point of being proud of my work now. Thank you Duncan.
I think if i want to copy this paint sheme for a space wolf i should take space wolfs grey, russ grey and fenrisian grey :) Or are there any other ideas :)
I feel like I missed this video somehow. Gonna give the ballbearings a try! Some of the colors are really hard to get mixed. ( And using the paints so rarely ) Great video!
Weird seing you using non-GW products, will take some time to adjust. But thanks for your Videos, you actually took my "fesr" of painting away. Have started my first Modell today with help of your Taurox Prime Guide
did someone from gw run in and steal his army painter brush?
Love listening to this guy talking about paints.
Wait...how many coats?
