    • To be fair bro you dont have to like the game, i personaly really liked it, but i think that as long as youre not an asshole about somebodys opinion of the game or you dont shit on someone who likes it or hates it, then its a valid opinion. Honestly the thing i most hated about this game is the toxic community, on one side theres idiots whos shit on it for it having a lesbian protagonist and on the other theres peapole who think they are better or superior for likeing the game and thats just dumb. Its ok to hace deifferent opinions as long as it has valid points and it respects others, sadly thats something the internet does'nt seen to understand. And i a m glad to see a coment like yours that is actually pretty nice about it.

  • None of this is directed at the video or it's author (fantastic video, loved it). Even the people lauded as the "reasonable" ones who were on the hate train for TLOU2 have participated in insane conspiracy theories, lies and character assassination. The first being that Neil Druckmann hates Joel. Joel is literally a self insert for Neil and is a character he created back in college. All of Joel's favorite songs are Neil's favorite songs, Joel's stoic exterior and soft interior reflects Neil himself, hell even Joel's death was inspired by a personal experience he had when he was younger. He was struck in the head with a golf club and had to be rushed to the hospital. To this day, has a dent in his skull from the incident. The second is that Neil Druckmann isn't actually at all responsible for the first game and were it not for Bruce Straley, Neil would have destroyed Part I. This is probably the most insane and provably false one that I've seen and it's PROLIFIC. Even the most "reasonable" TLOU2 detractors believe this. Joel and Ellie are characters Neil Druckmann ALONE created in college and the story of the Last of Us had been outlined BY HIM during that time. Neil Druckmann served as CREATIVE DIRECTOR and WRITER of TLOU which, to anyone who may not understand, means EVERYTHING GOES THROUGH HIM. Straley served as TECHNICAL DIRECTOR (and specifically NOT writer) which, while a very important role, has little input on the creative elements of the game itself. Neil is the one who cast Troy and Ashley. Neil is the one who was on set every day directing the actors. Neil was the one who wrote the story. In fact, the truth is that Neil Druckmann likely had MORE creative control over TLOU1 than he did over TLOU2. Neil served as Creative director and writer on The Last of Us and Left Behind whereas he served as co-writer on Part II with Halley Gross. So, if anything, she's the one you should be blaming if you were to be logically consistent. Even then you'd be wrong. The third is that Anita Sarkeesian was a consultant for the game and Neil is obsessed with her so that's why Left Behind and TLOU2 have an evil SJW agenda. Probably the easiest one to dismiss as the insane ramblings of paranoid, politically motivated, terminally online smooth-brains as the reality of what happened is so benign. Anita Sarkeesian visited NaughtyDog headquarters ONCE and was simply given a tour of the facility and a glimpse at some of the things that were being worked on. This is incredibly common for journalists in all industries. Anita was not the only one to visit ND in this capacity. Druckmann has met Sarkeesian all of two or three times and they've barely shared more than a few words with one another. Neil simply had the "audacity" to say that Anita had a point that video games often depict female characters as one-dimensional sex objects meant to be a conquest for the male protagonist and that it would be cool to see something different for once. This is literally just a fact. Triggered by FACTS and LOGIC snowflake? There's many more but, honestly? It's just TDS, TLOU2 Derangement Syndrome.

  • Great points. I just finished this game last week and absolutely loved it. I can not believe some people hate it so much. At the end I was cheering for both. Now I find out 90% only cheered for Ellie. It's kind of sad, and fits perfectly into a world where people seem to have lost the ability to see the other side. People cant see it even see it when they follow the character for 10 hours.

  • When I played this game, I thought it was cool as hell that that they showed the perspective of Abby. That they were showing us, literally, there's two sides of every story. And here we get to experience both of those sides. I've been the villain in other people's stories, even though I thought they were the villain in mine. But I later saw my bullshit, and that I was wrong, or we both were, whatever. And this game made me think about that. It felt very human.

  • I just finished it again and this is the perfect summation of everything I’ve felt after completing. Seriously man you are a big brain human. You so eloquently summarised so many of the nuances that made this game, in my opinion, a masterpiece. I hated the first time but I’m slowly seeing the light. There’s almost a part of me in a twisted way that feels like naughty dog wants you to hate it. Your are meant to HATE the fact that Joel dies. But as I slowly come to acceptance with his death and the emotional grief the game made me feel i start to appreciate the beauty and mastery in it. In a way the audience can almost have their own process of acceptance through playthroughs of this game.

  • As always you changed my opinion and I appreciate the game a lot more even though I don’t think it’s perfect or as good as the first game. And you pointing out Abby’s dreams really opened my eyes. BUT I still dislike Abby’s story and not because she killed Joel. It’s just that it was a little boring playing as her after Ellie because Ellie’s is just more interesting to me. Her arc and descent into darkness was so compelling, all her friends are interesting as characters and I care about her motivations. Abby’s flashbacks didn’t make me care about her motivations as much as I did Ellie even though I understand them. That sounds bad but it’s a fictional video game so they have to try harder to make me feel sad about someone’s dad dying. For example Sarah’s death is emotional because they established their relationship really well, we played as Sarah and felt the fear and confusion of a little girl watching the world fall apart and right after see how protective Joel was over her. Even Ellie watching Joel die was done better and not just because we already care about her and Joel. There were so many layers to that moment for example the state of their relationship at that point and the fact that they were gonna mend their bond. And the scene itself was so heartbreaking because of Ellie having to watch him die a brutal death while desperately begging Abby to stop. Compared to that, Abby saving a zebra with her dad and then just walking in on him dead didn’t make me care as much(also her dad was a dumbass for pointing a scalpel against Joel so I can not bring myself to feel bad for him. I think if Abby was related to Marlene it would’ve been better). Her friends except Lev are so bland and boring(Owen is interesting but for a single scene). Lev is the only reason I liked it but I think the fact that I care way more about him than I do Abby is a bad sign. I understand why we had to play as her but most of the time I was just waiting till I could play as Ellie again.

  • The thing is that all of the hidden meanings that the story has at the end of the day aren't that deep really (but they can make you feel like they are, because you have to analyse and really look into the story to find them) , and the narrative just feels dumb and stupid, with a cliché revenge story that introduces a bunch of very bad characters, and kills of fucks up all of the good ones from the first game, and on top of that kills everything that was good on the franchise to realise the dumb plot that they created. You can't like Abby because, even though she has every reason to want to kill Joel, she's not a good character at all, she isn't that interesting or compelling and she's constantly a prick (and the intention of the game is for her to be like that, but to improve as a person as she helps Lev and her sister and copes with her grief, but she doesn't really get there as she keeps that same annoying attitude and personality until the end of the game). If the story was happening in real life people would sympathize with and like Abby (and maybe would even support her over Ellie I think, because imo Ellie does it even worse to Abby than the opposite), but in a fictional story you won't really care about anyone if, on top of having a reasoning for their actions, they're not a compelling character, and that's the exact case for Abby. In short, they've managed to fuck up one of the greatest videogames of all time by doing a cliché, very dumb, poorly conceived revenge plot, that thinks it's so deep but in reality it's 100% the complete opposite, thanks for nothing Neil Druckmann (Jeez this comment is long lol, no one is going to read it probably but I had to say my piece)

  • How do you feel about part 3 being a prequel about what Joel and Tommy do after Sarah's death? I think it would be a smart way to bring back the fans who hated this game. Also, we get to explore and learn new things about this world such as the collapse of society from Joel's perspective and his transformation from a normal guy to a cold blooded killer and hardend survivalist.

    Tyler ChunTyler Chun20 ngày trước
  • Unfortunately you can't really call the last of us 2 a good sequel, because Joel is dies so early on it prevents how good this game can be as a sequel, the main arc of the first game was Joel's change of heart and Ellie and Joel's relationship is the foundation of the first games story. So it's not so much an issue to kill off a character, but it's that the game can't be a good sequel if the cliffhanger of Ellie and Joel's relationship isn't THUROUGHLY explored, yes the flashbacks kind of fix this but they only give us a minimal exploration of Ellies and Joel's relationship. Certainly not deep enough to satisfy what so many players were craving. If instead of Joel dying at the start Joel dies at the end, and if throughout the game we were able to see how Ellie found out what Joel did and then pushes him away and then we see their relationship degrade over the course of the story as Ellie struggles to forgive him and Joel struggles to get her trust back and at the end they resolve it and Ellie finally forgives him, and THEN Joel dies almost no one would have had a problem with that, and a significantly more amount of people would have liked the game and then it would have also solved one of the game's biggest issues.

  • TLOU2 is a really good game, but NOT as a sequel. So i strongly disagree with that but i have to say, you did change my perception of the game and im thinking about playing it again. Nonetheless, i still have to point something out: -When you start playing this game, you want to play it because of TLOU1, where Joel and Ellie are the main characters and the only thing you want is to play with them. So i understand the meaning (closure and finding peace) but they cant expect people to see that so easily if they want them to see it through a character that kill and make suffer the characters you already care about, they cant expect people to empathize with Abby and see the background of her story when she already killed Joel and your empathy is with him. Thats where storytelling fails because storytelling is all about empathy (especially in this world where the good and bad is very blurred) and you cant empathize with the robber if he's robbing you, so to empathize with Abby you have to overlook things or make like TLOU1 never happened. You go with Ellie, its her journey, you've been with her since TLOU1 and you feel the same rage she feels about Joel's death, you wanna kill Abby as much as her but then when we finally got the chance to do it, she realizes she doesnt need to, so she doesnt, but you still want to and thats the problem. As a player you want her to do it because you need you're own closure as a player, and that is to kill the character that killed your character. They introduce a new character in the sequel as the main villain by KILLING THE MAIN CHARACTER of the previous game, and just then they show her like she's not a villain, that she's a person too and she has her own story, when they should've shown that first. If TLOU1 wouldn’t exist, the story of TLOU2 would work just fine, the game on its own its perfect. But its a sequel, so its very far from being perfect

    joseignacioctmjoseignacioctm22 ngày trước
    • You say storytelling is all about empathy, yet you're expecting stories to cater to people only capable of selective empathy. Also, as someone who was nearly mugged once, empathizing with the robber is one of the best ways to talk them down. Also, if you still wanted to kill Abby by the end, you're just a psycho.

It was such a hard choice and it took her going to the very edge of her soul to do it. The editing of the game is kinda weird but the ending really justified it for me, because it drives home that life is often so hard and so disappointing. People you trust hurt you. People you love leave you. But the ability to hold on to your own life is such a powerful and daily choice that all of us have.

  • I'm super super late to the video, but dude you got the ending completely wrong: Ellie gets closure and a peace of mind through a) having agency/ a choice b) letting Abby go - Why? Because Joel took away her agency - he made the decision to take her away from the hospital -FOR HER, and she has to live with it, and she can't forgive him, and she can't double forgive him after Abby takes that chance away from her. So in a way Ellie gets closure when she gets agency (over Abbys life) and then find the literal means to forgive Joel and get a peace of mind through letting Abby go - she had it, she had her revenge in her hands, and she FINALLY had the agency to LET GO. God I hope I make sense.

    NemirNemirTháng trước

  • Also, I literally struggled so many times in battling against Ellie/Abby in this game. I've never seen that be done before? There was some points I just did not want to go further. I didn't want to keep pressing the buttons but I had to. I think it's so compelling, and I love how you brought that up. Definitely not something a lot of mediums try and play with. I think more videogames - especially when so many try and pull the "violence is terrible" card while making it so fun - should toy more with scenarios like these.

  • I liked the game a lot, combat and mechanics are all improved over the first game, amazing art design and animation. But it's writing is definitely sub par compared to the first game. I blame Bruce Straley for leaving the studio, and Naughty Dog hired some rando chick who wrote some bad episodes of WestWorld season 2 to write this game. I don't think Joel died in some disrespectful way. Would you would frame it that way if it was a big burly dude who killed him? What does it matter that it was with a golf club? If it was a baseball bat it would be more dignified? What about a mace with spikes on it? Anyways, bad video, dude just talks through obvious plot points, describing the obvious theming exhaustively is not really a good defense of it.

  • In my opinion, TLOU2 is what Game of Thrones was but unfortunately stopped being, a history that did not care about giving fans what they wanted, but what the story needed, a story with great moral ambiguity and that showed characters that were more than caricatures. I am tired of people comparing TLOU2 to GOT season 8, Neil druckmann wrote a masterpiece that demanded time, while Dan and David created a final season that was rushed and left a lot to be desired. TLOU2 should be what stories with moral ambiguity should aspire to be.

  • One amazing aspect that rarely get discussed is how beautiful the Seraphite simple life vision seemed to be once you are on the island, sure they have become radicalized in this vision to the point of violence, but when you see the houses the woodworking tools the craftsmanship of everything they do it’s heartbreaking to see it all burn.

  • Great analysis. Nowadays, whenever I find a new game critic on the internet, the first thing I do is to check what he/she says about The Last of Us 2. I don't tolerate a critic who says TLOU2 is a bad game the same way I don't tolerate a movie critic who says The Godfather is a bad movie. Make no mistake, I think you can dislike TLOU2 (matter of taste), but I don't think you can say that it's a bad game (matter of analysis). For example, I don't like Bloodborne (that's my personal taste), but I'm well aware that the game is great (this is an analysis). People often think that reviewing something is just expressing your personal taste, when it's not.

  • Many people hate a game doesn't mean the game is bad. Just like Sasuke hates Itachi doesn't mean Itachi is a bad guy.

    • I'm glad that you don't think it as a bad game and sorry for what I said to you, but for some people when they hate a game just like those who hate TLOU2, they always considered the game is the worst game of all time, or of the year, the worst game they have ever played. And one more thing I wonder is that some people considered Cyberpunk is the best game and The Last of Us 2 is the worst game. Why like that ? It blows my mind. I don't want to compare both games, but It's weird for me to see something like that.

      Yu BunlengYu BunlengTháng trước
    • @Yu Bunleng I never said it was a bad game. I have no idea where you got that from dude. It's only the story which bothers alot of people. In my opinion the story could have been way better and could have actually matched the first last of us game but the story felt flat and forced. Not only was Joel's death handled poorly, people Ellie felt out of character. I personally don't really care about Abby to you the truth. Also Cyberpunk is crap I don't understand why you are comparing that just looks pathetic

      M BillaM BillaTháng trước
    • @M Billa So, The Last of Us 2 is a bad game or It just has the story that people hate ? The game is great. Also, I don't think the story is bad, but the question is why so many people hate it ?. For me, I think because they just hate Abby ( She is the one who killed Joel ) and the game forces you to play Abby for 10 hours. Maybe that why many people hate the game. If you still think the game is bad, Just compare it to many other games and see which one is better ? or compare to your best game Cyberpunk 2077, or whatever you want.

      Yu BunlengYu BunlengTháng trước
    • Yeah but how the fuck is that a comparison. Sasuke didn't know why Itachi destroyed his Clan. Of course he would hate him. The Last of Us 2 is just a step down from the story of the Last of Us

      Andrea MontañaAndrea Montaña2 tháng trước
    • @Davan Pruitte Nothing. They can do nothing about it, their hope would be demolished just as much as Joel stealing Ellie. But here's the thing about hope: It makes people extremely naive to believe that nothing will ever fail, so much to the point that they forget to think ahead and long term. The fireflies didn't consider the vaccine failing because they were so obsessed on the sheer possibility that it could work. So when it does fail, they are left with nothing else to do. But in their minds, at the very least, they attempted it. Because Joel stole Ellie, they would never know for certain how possible it could have been to develope the vaccine. Ellie will never forgive Joel because she's a naive girl who likes to dream big. Despite sounding impossible to make the vaccine, she still deep down likes to believe it will-- I mean, she think one day she will be an astronaut--- having big hopes is fundamental part of her character.

  • This is by far the best video about TLOU 2. I've just finished the game and I can say that I liked it. But after seeing this video my eyes were wide open. I was kinda confused with the ending and couldn't get my thoughts together but you've explained everything that I was questioning. The symbolism of Abby carrying Lev being the same as Joel rescuing Ellie from the hospital blew my mind. At this exact moment at the beach Ellie didn't see Abby, she saw Joel and finally understood why he rescued her thus forgiving him. That final flashback with Joel at the end is there not without a reason. Ellie is now free, the past isn't as painful anymore because she is at peace with Joel. You made me understand this piece of art and I can't thank you enough for this.

I still often think about the messages of guilt, selfishness, loss, anger, forgiveness, and self awareness and know that they are a message of decency and humanity in an unforgiving world. Forgive yourselves guys. Peace.

  • People want video games and entertainment in general to make them feel good and feel some sadness but not enough to just ruin the experience of absorbing said entertainment, this game doesn’t want to please you and have an “enjoyable” experience it wants to leave u feeling shit and have an experience unlike any other entertainment. I respect it but I could never like this game as any other video game I’ve played but I admire how far naughty dog were willing to go to do something unique. I think me and most people just don’t want their entertainment to be this intense at the end of the day so while I respecc I don’t ever want to play it again and move on from every thinking about it.

    Chris NelsonChris Nelson2 tháng trước
    • Oh man. The entire point of Abby's story in TLOU2 is that she was wrong to kill Joel. Her redemption came with doing good in protecting Lev rather than doing bad in killing Joel. Just like the eugenicist that is Thanos is also obviously wrong. Like are you okay? Do you value life at all?

      James LanierJames LanierTháng trước
  • Abby is a good villain just like Thanos in Avengers Infinity War Thanos had to do what he did just like a Abby had to do what she did if he didn't complete the snap the life on Earth will cease to exist that's a small price to pay for salvation if he doesn't kill off half the population man the population on Earth will starve to death not enough resources and too many people Thanos did the right thing just like Abby did the right thing by killing Joel 4 the death of her father.
