The iPhone 12’s MagSafe is nice quality-of-life improvement, but it’s not as perfect as Apple wants us to believe it is.

The iPhone 12 released to much fanfare with a new form factor in the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Along with a new squared-edge design, one of the headlining features was the return of Apple’s famous MagSafe brand; however, rather than being the MacBook-friendly charge port that would prevent your computer from falling off of a countertop, this new iPhone MagSafe design permits the usage of handy magnetic accessories like the iPhone MagSafe charger and MagSafe cases, MagSafe car mounts, and other MagSafe accessories. But there’s a problem with MagSafe. It’s just... well... it’s limited by physics. How has Apple tried to combat some of these hurdles and how has their selection in magnet chemistry, placement, surface area, and depth affected how strong these magnets attach? Let’s find out today as we learn about magnets, shear force, pull force, plating, and what that means for the best iPhone MagSafe accessories!

  • Hi everyone, it’s Quinn! I got married this past week and am enjoying a honeymoon with my beautiful new bride. Please enjoy this video about MagSafe and get ready for the best M1 Mac coverage you could dream of coming in the next few days upon my return. Stay snazzy!

  • tech is from like 2006. They are trying to recoup the R&D for it. The Powerbook G4 had problems with power connector. The rest of the world just used breakaway cables. The problem with apple was the connector gripped and the laptop wouldn't be pulled, instead the connector started break and lead to damage, sparks and even fire. And magsafe is basically just a gimmick and you can tell by the way they went "hey... it cannot just charge! It needs to do other things! Lets make a wallet and other gimmicky things iCultists can buy!"

  • .I don't mind if Apple licences exclusive tech for Apple devices and charges extra for them as long as they are just better than industry standarts. That was the Apple I used to fall in love with. That was the reason why I bought my first iPhone, 4S. It was just better, Apple was just better in every way. .Steve Jobs was a visionary who wanted to make better products whereas Tim Cook is a businessman who wants a better company. Steve Jobs created great products but Apple couldn't make profit with them until Tim Cook joined the team and make a business out of them. Apple used to be the best, we paid for the best, now it's just "Apple tax" for the sake of it. Even worse; you pay more to get less in most cases. .However I kinda feel the wind of change in Apple with the release of M1 chip, better keyboard and thermals on Macbooks, USB C on iPads, rumoured new line of Macbooks. Could it be that Apple just wants to be the best again? Are they tired of their own bullshit and they just want their crown back? But they still have lightning port on iPhone 12. I thought they were joking when they did that on iPhone X 3 years ago, it's not even a meme anymore. On the other hand they introduced MagSafe for iPhones and tbh I like it. I know it's not perfect but I think it's very convenient still. Belkin 3 in 1 charger is the greatest charger ever. It's not available in my region, nor do I have the last gen iPhone, Watch or AirPods but it's on my list already. .About the EU charger standart and possible removal of the last available port on iPhones: I like those ideas. I LOVE those ideas. I didn't like it when they removed the headphone jack, I thought it was too early but I understand the fact that someone needed to have the balls to do it in order to advance our tech, now everyone has access to bluetooth headphones, they are a lot cheaper and they are more convenient. And they didn't just remove it, they also provided an alternative, iPhone 8 for those who still want the jack. Removing the charger was bullshit in some degree, they mostly did it for money but it had to be done anyways. .As a world, we all need to standardise a lot of things in tech. For various reasons including; healthy environment and cheaper solutions. 3 major and closest regions use 3 different wall plugs: The US, EU and UK. That's not the future and that needs to change asap. With that, we should also standardise ports on all devices: Just like Apple is doing with Macbooks, iPads, Watch and AirPods; they use USB Cs now, You don't need different cables for each device, except for iPhones (facepalm). But with them you can buy a MagSafe charger, an all in one preferably and reduce the need of lots of cables, resulting in less pollution, long term value, cleaner environment and work space. You can have a Macbook and an all in one charger and charge your Macbook, iPhone, Watch, AirPods simultaneously with down to 1 cable only and with 1 more cable you can add iPad to the collection. Having no charger included and buying extra wireless chargers is more expensive, it feels like a scam and trust me it's even more expensive for me because of up to 100% tax in my country and horrible currency rates (iPhone 12 Pro is about 6 times of minimum wage - imagine it being 7000 dollars in US); but it's something we need to make some sacrifice for, especially people of 1st world countries. I'll sound like a fanboy but I think Apple is doing a little bit of the right thing here. They are really reducing our footprint, not by much, not enough, I know, but they are doing it surely and they are also leading the world. Yeah, they also have to make profit while doing that and it looks bad from the outside perspective, they look like scamming us. But it's something I can live with, as long as they make good products and their decisions help saving the environment and creating a better future. I'm still using an iPhone 5S, I switched after 4S and I also use my first gen iPad Air (7 years old). I couldn't have done that with any other brand. I didn't buy any phone/tablet in the last 6 years (and I use them extensively, especially the iPad, about 4-5 hours a day), they saved me a lot of money but also I didn't pollute the environment with those electronics. Anyways, I just want the Apple I used to love back. I know I might be a victim of wishful thinking, being a fanboy and thinking that Apple is doing the good thing because that's what I want to believe but we'll see I guess. I'm waiting for this summer's releases. Is Apple going to lead the world again or they continue on milking the fanboys?

  • Lightning physically cannot support USB 3 speeds as there are only 8 pins in a lightning connector while USB 3.0 requires a total of 9 (2 power and 7 data). USB C requires even more wires. So its not apple intentionally gimping the connector. It's a physical limitation.

  • Non-iPhone user here, so maybe some stupid questions, but... Does the constant sliding of the charging dock across the back of the phone scratch the phone? Does the constant tugging on the cord to remove the dock make the cord break fast? What happens if you get the charging dock magnet next to your credit cards... does it de-magnetize them and does it stick to everything that metal? Also, I use my charging port on my Android to connect to the computer all the time for file transfers. Its the most reliable method.

  • I love MagSafe with the Belkin Boost Charge Pro 3-in-1 MagSafe + Apple Watch + AirPod charger. It feels like the future just snapping my wallet off and clicking the phone on the charger, not fumbling with a Lightning cable (or USB-C cable) in the dark, turning the lights back on just to find the charge port. (I still have to turn the lights on to position the AirPods Pro though. Arrrrrrgh.) But I TOTALLY agree Apple needs to rubberize every MagSafe surface. Their clear MagSafe case is SUPER slick. I mean, almost Teflon slick. It still works with the wallet, but WHY NOT make it work better? OTOH another VIworldr was able to shake the wallet off, but I could not. Definitely not skinny jeans compatible though.

    Dayne CloseDayne CloseTháng trước
  • basically what I have done is give us a hockey puck charger with magnets to hook to the back to her phone to do exactly what the lightning cable can do. The lightning cable also doesn’t get hot and throttle the charge speed on my phone. The next safe hockey puck does. That thing gets extremely warm and my iPhone slows way down when it comes to charging. For me that is a dealbreaker. I’m selling my MagSafe hockey puck. I will stick with the lightning cord charger for as long as they have them on these phones. It is faster. you say in this video that there’s only three water difference between the MagSafe and a lightning charger. But those three whites make a huge difference when it comes to charge times. And like I said the heating of the massive charger and my phone is a big problem for me. Everyone knows that extreme heat is death to a battery overtime. I’m spending almost $1500 for a phone. I am not going to hook some new charger up to it and ruin it. Maybe down the road it will be better. Maybe They will get the heat issue dealt with in the speed. But until that day lightning cord is how I will charge.

  • Wireless charging when compared with wired is dramatically less efficient. Switching all US phones from wired to wireless could cause an additional 600 million pounds of carbon dioxide to be emitted, and consume an additional 650 giga watt hours of electricity. (Assumed numbers: US electrical grid produces 0.92 pounds of co2 per kwh, each actively used phone has a battery capacity of 12wh and is charged once completely each day. Basically, I low balled it.) These numbers are just for America.
