You Bet Your Life #53-23 Spunky old lady vs. Groucho (Secret word 'Clock', Feb 18, 1954)

The old lady in couple #3 is the clear highlight of this episode. Neither Groucho nor his cigars impress her at all, but Groucho seems genuinely tickled by her.
COUPLE #1: Ann Rierdon, Arthur Murray dance instructor / Bill Eddy
COUPLE #2: Shirley Lestelle, a woman with a pip-squeaky voice / Charles Sandoval, who's wearing an eye patch because he's "sensitive to the lights"
COUPLE #3: Athol Smerdon, from Australia / Mary Sackett, a spunky old lady who complains about Groucho's cigar-- and he obligingly puts it out!

  • My name is Martin. I’m a 69-year old attorney in Louisville Kentucky. Recently a Democratic canvasser came over and asked me if I was a Democrat or a Republican. I told her that I am “a Marxist of the Groucho School.”

  • I could've kicked him when he answered Texas was the largest state east of the Mississippi. Doh! According to the date given for this broadcast, I was two months old at the time. Too young to know Groucho in his prime, other than in reruns. He died when I was 23, but I really didn't know him until years later. But, I DO remember Project Mercury and my parent's tension in the launches of Shepard and Glenn. Also remember sitting in the front yard and having my older brother point out to me the 'new' 1959 cars on the highway.

  • Timeline of the Catholic Church: Language: The history of the Catholic Church is integral to the history of Christianity as a whole. It is also, according to church historian, Mark A. Noll, the "world's oldest continuously functioning international institution." [1] This article covers a period of just under two thousand years... Over time, schisms have disrupted the unity of Christianity. The Catholic Church considers that major divisions occurred in c.144 with Marcionism, [2] 318 with Arianism, 451 with the Oriental Orthodox, 1054 to 1449 (see East-West Schism) during which time the Orthodox Churches of the East parted ways with the Western Church over doctrinal issues (see the filioque) and papal primacy, and in 1517 with the Protestant Reformation, of which there were many divisions, resulting in over 200 denominations. The Catholic Church has been the driving force behind some of the major events of world history including the Christianization of Western and Central Europe and Latin America, the spreading of literacy and the foundation of the universities, hospitals, the Western tradition of monasticism, the development of art and music, literature, architecture, contributions to the scientific method, just war theory and trial by jury. It has played a powerful role in global affairs, including the Reconquista, the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Investiture Controversy, the establishment of the Holy Roman Empire, and the Fall of Communism in Eastern Europe in the late 20th century.

  • For the Peruvian economist, see Hernando de Soto (economist). Hernando de Soto (/də ˈsoʊtoʊ/;[4] Spanish: [eɾˈnando ðe ˈsoto]; c. 1500 - May 21, 1542) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who was involved in expeditions in Nicaragua and the Yucatan Peninsula. He played an important role in Pizarro's conquest of the Inca Empire in Peru, but is best known for leading the first European expedition deep into the territory of the modern-day United States (through Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and most likely Arkansas). He is the first European documented as having crossed the Mississippi River. [5]

    Michael BeaumierMichael BeaumierTháng trước
    • Many better modern cars have variable rate power steering. As the car speeds up, the assistance is given less and less. Chrysler and GM argued over having full power steering vs being able to feel the road. Chrysler offered power steering that always assisted, and Chevrolet's kicked in at 3 pounds of wheel pressure. Chrysler argued that Chevrolet's power steering was only a parking aid. I can tell you personally, with a newer car with variable rate steering, that with the variable rate device unplugged, the steering is very luxurious and easy, but at high speeds there is a tendency to over-steer. At first I loved it unplugged, but after lots of high speed wandering, when I plugged it back in, I was thankful for the extra resistance at high speed.
